News from our Parish Community

Feast Day Blessing ~ There is a traditional method of blessing homes on the Feast of the Epiphany using chalk, an image reminding us of the dust of the earth from where we were made. This year, the chalk would be used to mark “20 + C + M + B + 13” over our doorways. The initials remind us of the traditional names of the Magi — Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar – and also stand for the Latin motto: “Christus, Mansionem Benedicat” (“May Christ bless this house”).  At home, this rhyme can be used as the blessing:

Caspar, Melchior, Balthasar!
Over us has risen a star.
Though the cold grows stronger,
Now the days grow longer.
Though the world loves night,
Christ is born, our Light!

Visitors from the East ~ Blessed Trinity welcomed its own visitors from the East, two young men from Rochester who are on a mission to visit “spiritually signficant in Western New York.” Chris and Luke dropped in on December 22, 2012 and — true to our pledge to answer any question a visitor may have about Blessed Trinity — they were welcomed by Usher Jerry Gallisdorfer. You can read about their impressions of Blessed Trinity and view their photos by clicking HERE.

January issue of GIVE US THIS DAY ~ On the weekend of January 5/6, parishioners will be receiving a complimentary copy of this month’s issue of GIVE US THIS DAY, a rather new publication of Liturgical Press. We hope you will enjoy using it at home. There are extra copies in the ushers’ pew in the middle of church. Please feel free to take extra copies for family and friends.

Church Calendars ~ Every year we are fortunate to have a beautiful religious calendar for the new year. Special thanks to Bud Dick and Vandercher & Dick Funeral Home for making this possible. If you have not received a calendar or would like another to share with family or friends, check for extra copies in the ushers’ pew at the church divide.

Looking Ahead ~ The annual Mass honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 20, 2013, at St. Katharine Drexel Church, 118 Schiller Street, Buffalo 14206. Bishop Richard Malone will be the main celebrant. The guest homilist will be the Rev. Michael Upson, Catholic Campus Ministry Chaplain at Monroe Community College in Rochester. There will be a reception in the church hall following the Mass, and participating parishes are asked to donate finger foods or desserts, as well as theme baskets. The latter will be raffled to benefit the Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Fund, and the scholarship committee is hoping for at least 5 baskets from each parish. If you are in a position to help in this regard, please bring your basket to Sr. Barbara by Monday January 14. Please bring finger foods or dessert donations with you on January 20.

News from NativityMiguel Middle School ~ Our students wish to thank Sister Maureen Harris, OSF, and Amy Johnson, Blessed Trinity’s Spiritual Care Outreach Coordinator, for allowing them to send Christmas cards to our homebound parishioners and those in senior care facilities. They take this responsibility quite seriously and are very happy when the recipients write back. Thank you for including them in this meaningful activity.  For information about the NativityMiguelMiddle School, please call Nancy Langer at 836-5188. Thank you.

Catholic Charities at Work in our Community ~ Like Mary and Joseph, who had to flee from their home land, there are millions of refugees displaced around the world. Catholic Charities has a tradition of welcoming a stranger, of resettling refugees who have been displaced from their countries of birth, fleeing from regimes or insurgents that seek to torture, imprison or kill them. Our Diocese offers a safe haven to refugees through the Catholic Charities immigration and Refugee Assistance Program. Here they find shelter, food, clothing and support. For more information on how you might help welcome the stranger, call 716-842-0270 and ask for the volunteer coordinator. Find Catholic Charities at ccwny.org, facebook.com/ccbuffalo and twitter.com/ccbuffalo.

A Special Request for our Helping Hands Food Pantry ~ Richard Plunkett advises that The Pantry has a critical need for volunteers with a pick-up truck who might be available a few hours each week or every other week for transport of food donations or extra food orders to the Helping Hands Food Pantry. If you can lend a hand or need further information, please contact Richard at 861-5022.

On a related note, The Helping Hands Food Pantry has been experiencing chronic shortages of cereal (store brands welcome). Their supply of cereal is usually gone by the end of the first week after the monthly food delivery from the Food Bank. They also are in need of any kind of canned vegetables, juice or canned soup, as well as flour or sugar and baking supplies. Many younger people and grandparents are asking for baby supplies, such as diapers and formula. You should also know that the food pantry now has used clothing that is clean and folded according to size for men, women, boys, girls and infants. They are in greatest need of clothing for men and infants. All clothing is donated and must be cleaned upon acceptance.

Elizabeth Ann Seton is one of the keystones of the American Catholic Church. A convert to Catholicism, she founded the first American religious community for women, the Sisters of Charity. Widowed at the age of 30, she opened the first American parish school in Baltimore, Maryland as a means of supporting her family. She also established the first American Catholic orphanage. She did all this in the span of 46 years while raising her five children. St. Elizabeth Seton suffered great trials of sickness, misunderstanding, the death of loved ones (her husband and two young daughters) and the heartache of a wayward son. She died January 4, 1821, and became the first American-born citizen to be beatified (1963) and then canonized (1975). The Altar of Sacrifice at Blessed Trinity contains a relic of Mother Seton. This woodcarving, a gift of the Southtowns Woodcarvers of WNY, is affixed to the church’s left (east) transept wall.

Prisoner Gifts 2012 ~ Blessed Trinity will again host the assembly of Christmas gift bags for prison inmates. The Christmas Prison Package Project originated with Sr. Karen Klimczak, SSJ, at the Bissonette House over 20 years ago, and we are privileged to continue its message of forgiveness and non-violence. Janice Burns is coordinating the event with Peaceprints Prison Ministries. Previously, we have provided 1000 gift bags for men incarcerated at Wende Correctional Facility. This year, the ministry is being extended to women inmates at Albion and the target number is now 2000. Our parish has been asked to donate instant hot cocoa, and our goal is 4,000 individual serving envelopes.  Please bring your donations to church by December 2, and place them in the labeled back pew. The white paper gift bags are now available for decoration. If your are interested, contact Jan Burns at 716-491-4223.

The actual assembly will take place on Friday, December 7. Help is needed for both shifts: 9:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. until completion. Please consider joining volunteers from area parishes in this work of mercy during our Year of Faith.

Our Trinity Concert Series continues at 3 p.m. on Sunday, December 9, with A Brass and Organ Christmas featuring The Buffalo Brass Choir under the direction of Nick DelBello and guest organist Peter Gonciarz playing our newly restored Tellers-Kent Organ. Please join us and enjoy your holiday favorites. A free-will offering will be taken. Click HERE for information about future concerts in the 2012-13 series.

The Ladies Sodality Christmas Party will be held on Monday evening, December 10, at 6:30 in St. Charles Hall. All women of the parish are invited to participate in the evening of prayer and fellowship with members of the Sodality and their friends in anticipation of the Christmas season. The evening will include a Service of Remembrance for recently deceased members. If you are willing to donate a hors d’oeuvre or dessert, please contact President Vera Andrew no later than December 2. The cost of the party is $5 per person, and guests are welcome. In lieu of a gift exchange, we will again be collecting small gifts to be used in Christmas gift bags for our parish shut-ins and those in senior care facilities.

Gifts for our Shut-ins ~ The Ladies Sodality will be assembling Christmas presents to be delivered to our homebound parishioners and those in senior care facilities. Instead of a gift to exchange, Sodality members are asked to spend approximately $15 and bring their unwrapped purchases to the December 10 dinner. Suggested items include: lap robes and fleece throws, shawls or shrugs, socks, hand/body lotion, baby powder, lip balm, squeezable stress balls, eyeglass wipes, large print books or word games, or cash in an unsealed gift card for a hair cut or shampoo & set. Ready-to-eat food items such as jam, jelly, toaster pastries, candy or cookies; jello, fruit or pudding cups; or “add water” mixes; e.g., soup cups, single-serving oatmeal packets, tea, cocoa or coffee are also acceptable for the homebound. You don’t have to be a Sodality member to participate, but it is important that all gift items be received no later than December 9 so that the presents are ready for delivery by Sunday, DECEMBER 15. Please place your items in the specially marked basket near the statue of St. Joseph. If you would like to contribute money so that others may shop, please give your donation to Vera Andrew or Mickey Dick.

Support Elderly Religious ~ A parishioner writes, “As a Catholic school student from grades K-12, I was formed to be the person I am by many religious brothers and sisters and I am forever grateful.” Show your thanks for the senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests who made a positive difference in so many lives. Please give generously to the collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious on the weekend of December 8/9.

Thirty-fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

November 25 – December 2, 2012

The theme of the [church’s stained glass skylight] is Christ the King…. The central panel shows Christ reigning as Lord of the kingdom that we pray will come. On either side of him are seven panels. Some contain full-length figures of Angels, and the rest contain symbols of both his suffering (below) and of his glorification (middle of the panel). Rev. News from our Parish Community

Thanksgiving at Blessed Trinity ~ Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, November 22, at 10:00 a.m. Please join us to begin the celebration around the Table of the Lord. As a response to the mission of the Gospel: to feed the hungry and car for the poor, we invite you to bring non-perishable food items that will be taken later to Blessed Trinity’s Helping Hands Food Pantry. Our collection that day will be for the pantry.

We give thanks … for students in the Canisius College Masters in Sports Administration program who helped to clean our church as Community Day volunteers on November 10th. Click HERE for photos of “The Clean Team.”

Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund ~ Catholic Charities USA has been working tirelessly throughout the storm-related areas to bring relief and assistance to those left without shelter or in need of aid.  Its resources, however, are being spread thin, and it is in need of our support.  And since Hurricane Sandy hit not just the United States but Cuba, Haiti, Jamaica and other countries of the Caribbean, Catholic Relief Services personnel also have been hard at work assisting those in need. Bishop Richard Malone, with all the Bishops of the United States, invites all parishes to take up a special voluntary collection to assist Catholic Charities USA and Catholic Relief Services in responding to the needs of the people who are suffering at this time and who are in need of our financial aid as a result of Hurricane Sandy. On November 17 & 18 we will have a special second collection designated for immediate relief and to assist with long-term rehabilitation for the victims of Hurricane Sandy. As the Catholic Church of Western New York, we offer our condolences and prayers to our brothers and sisters in the New York City area as well as New Jersey, and all who have suffered as a result of this natural disaster.  May we all be united in prayer as we pray for victims and survivors and all those who are working hard to assist those in need.  Thank you! (The above is taken from Bishop Malone’s letter to all parishes and Institutions of the Buffalo Diocese).

The Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) needs your support. CCHD was founded to end the cycle of poverty in America by funding organizations that help individuals help themselves. With the tradition of improving education, housing situations, and economic development, CCHD continues to make a positive impact in communities nationwide. Fight poverty in America. Defend human dignity. Give to the CCHD Collection on November 17 & 18.

A Toast to Our Volunteers ~ The parish wishes to thank those who worked so hard to make our recent wine tasting such a success. First and foremost, we thank Bill Warren and Hertel Parker Liquor for their generosity and Bill and his wife, Gwen, for dispensing both wine and selection tips to our guests on October 26. Naturally, we thank everyone who donated hors d’ouevres or desserts to compliment the wines, or raffle and silent auction items. But we owe a special debt of gratitude to those who made the event happen: They include general chair Bud Dick and his able committee including: Judy Casassa, Alice Davis, Mickey Dick, Ellen Duffy, Cathy Gress, Amy Johnson, Angela Jost, Dorothy Manuppelli, Toni Maus, Kathy Press, Jessie Wells, and Don & Bonnie Williams. We also thank Chris Puchalski for re-instituting the church tour — this time with a candlelight theme — and Terry Gress for assisting with docent duties. The event raised nearly $4,000 for the church’s Under This Roof preservation fund.

Mission Passports ~ Last month Father Reger introduced the Year of Faith Program that Bishop Malone inaugurated for our Diocese at a Mass at Our Lady of Victory Basilica on Sunday, October 14. Blessed Trinity “Ambassadors” received Mission Passports for our parish and distributed them to us at each Mass. We are being called today to carry on Christ’s mission, to be witnesses to the Gospel by our lives, to bear the Good News, and to serve one another. If you were unable to be here or would need an extra copy, you will find Passports on a table near the Ushers’ seat in the middle of Church.
