Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

February 10 – February 17, 2013

Freast of Our Lady of Lourdes, February 11. The painting on the wall behind the Altar of the Blessed Virgin to the left of the Sanctuary at Blessed Trinity is of the Virgin Mary “seen fulfilling the prophecy of Genesis (3:15), with the serpent under her feet.” The figure to the left of Mary is “St. Bernadette Soubirous (1844-1879), to whom Our Lady appeared at Lourdes, France in 1858…. The message of Lourdes was really an invitation to trust in the power of prayer regardless of how desperate the situation is, to have great concern for the sick, and to sincerely trust in the concern of Mary for the followers of her son.” (Rev. Walter Kern’s Guidebook to Blessed Trinity Roman Catholic Church, page 44).

Bishop Richard Malone will be the main celebrant. The guest homilist will be the Rev. Michael Upson, Catholic Campus Ministry Chaplain at Monroe Community College in Rochester. There will be a reception in the church hall following the Mass, and participating parishes are asked to donate finger foods or desserts, as well as theme baskets. The latter will be raffled to benefit the Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Fund, and the scholarship committee is hoping for at least 5 baskets from each parish. If you are in a position to help in this regard, please bring your basket to Sr. Barbara by Monday January 14. Please bring finger foods or dessert donations with you on January 20.

Counting Our Blessings ~ The pipe organ sang with new voice and the angels came. Once again, Mary and Joseph found the Babe and climbed up the cellar steps with garlands, lights, lanterns and wreaths to be arranged and hung by tall people. Music and voice, prayers and carols … And there was worship — then greetings and gifts. Communion — communication was holy Christmas because of you! Thank you, from Father Reger and the Staff.

Attention Bingo Workers ~ There will be an important meeting in St. Charles Hall on Sunday, January 27, following the 10:00 a.m. Mass.

Charitable Contributions ~ If you need a 2012 Statement of Contributions for income tax purposes, please contact Roy Laciura at the rectory, 716-833-0301.

Catholic Charities Appeal ~ Protect, Strengthen, Empower. Please Give to the 2013 Catholic Charities Appeal. Last year, thanks to the generous support of donors throughout the Western New York community, Catholic Charities of Buffalo was able to positively impact the lives of children, families and seniors across the region with everything from basic needs like food, clothing and shelter, to mental health counseling or education services. Bishop Richard J. Malone has announced this year’s goal of $10.7 million. The patron of the 2013 Appeal, Blessed Frederic Ozanam, inspires us to be as committed in our own time and community as he was in nineteenthcentury France. We look forward to working with you now through Appeal Week or until our goal is reached. Find out more at ccwny.org, facebook.com/ccbuffalo and twitter.com/ccbuffalo.

Church Calendars ~ Every year we are fortunate to have a beautiful religious calendar for the new year. Special thanks to Bud Dick and Vandercher & Dick Funeral Home for making this possible. If you have not received a calendar or would like another to share with family or friends, check for extra copies in the ushers’ pew at the church divide.

News from NativityMiguel Middle School ~ Our students wish to thank Sister Maureen Harris, OSF, and Amy Johnson, Blessed Trinity’s Spiritual Care Outreach Coordinator, for allowing them to send Christmas cards to our homebound parishioners and those in senior care facilities. They take this responsibility quite seriously and are very happy when the recipients write back. Thank you for including them in this meaningful activity.  For information about the NativityMiguelMiddle School, please call Nancy Langer at 836-5188. Thank you.

A Special Request for our Helping Hands Food Pantry ~ Richard Plunkett advises that The Pantry has a critical need for volunteers with a pick-up truck who might be available a few hours each week or every other week for transport of food donations or extra food orders to the Helping Hands Food Pantry. If you can lend a hand or need further information, please contact Richard at 861-5022.

On a related note, The Helping Hands Food Pantry has been experiencing chronic shortages of cereal (store brands welcome). Their supply of cereal is usually gone by the end of the first week after the monthly food delivery from the Food Bank. They also are in need of any kind of canned vegetables, juice or canned soup, as well as flour or sugar and baking supplies. Many younger people and grandparents are asking for baby supplies, such as diapers and formula. You should also know that the food pantry now has used clothing that is clean and folded according to size for men, women, boys, girls and infants. They are in greatest need of clothing for men and infants. All clothing is donated and must be cleaned upon acceptance.
