Assembly of gift bags for Prison Project

Photo by Derek Gee, The Buffalo News

On Friday, December 6, Sister Karen Klimczak’s legacy Christmas Prison Package Project will continue at Blessed Trinity when dozens of volunteers gather in the church to assemble nearly 2000 gift bags for men and women in Erie County correctional facilities. Anyone interested in assisting can join one of two shifts: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 6 p.m. until completion (usually about 9 p.m.). Just bring your willing hands and hearts to our church at 317 Leroy Avenue, Buffalo, NY 14214. Sister Karen originated the project years ago so that incarcerated men would know they were not forgotten. The project has since been expanded to include women inmates. Thousands of pre-packaged food items as well as paperback books have been collected from area congregations, community members and businesses, but they need to be packed into hand-decorated bags and readied for delivery.

Gifts for La Casa ~ We invite you again this year to be a part of bringing Christmas to the refugees – men, women and children – who reside at Vive La Casa on Wyoming Avenue. For many years this was a favorite tradition for Sister Flavia. This year we will be collecting hats, scarves, mittens/gloves for children and adults, and toys. If you would like to participate in this effort, please bring your unwrapped gifts and place them in our La Casa box by Sunday, December 15. Thank You!

Retirement Fund for Religious ~ Senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests spent years working in Catholic schools, hospitals, and social service agencies, often for little, if any, pay. Their sacrifices now leave their religious communities without adequate savings for retirement and elder care. Your gift to the Retirement Fund for Religious collection helps provide prescription medications, nursing care, and more for thousands of elderly religious. Please give to those who have given a lifetime. Support elderly religious. A parishioner writes, “As a Catholic school student from grades K – 12, I was formed to be the person I am by many religious brothers and sisters, and I am forever grateful.” Show your appreciation for the senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests who made a positive difference in so many lives. Please give generously to the collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious on December 7/8.

Thank you for your contributions to The Collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development! Your generous gifts will help CCHD end poverty in America through better education, improved housing, and overall economic development. Through CCHD and its beneficiaries, we manifest Catholic social teaching and carry out Jesus’ mission to “bring glad tidings to the poor… to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free” (Lk 4:18).

 St. Cecilia
November 22

This week, the Church honors St. Cecelia, patroness of musicians. Depictions of St. Cecelia appear in
two different places in Blessed Trinity Church: the rose window in the choir loft and
Joseph Mazur’s procession of holy people in the church dome. In this photo of the dome by Gary Kelley,
the ten figures representing the Virgins and Widows appear to the right of the winding path. St. Cecilia
is the kneeling figure holding organ pipes at the far right of the group of women.

Doors Open Niagara ~ Thank you, thank you, thank you to all the volunteers who welcomed visitors to Blessed Trinity on October 19 and 20, as Blessed Trinity participated in the Bi-National Tourism Alliance’s Doors Open Niagara weekend. We were one of 29 historic sites in ten cities on both sides of the border who joined in showcasing their landmark buildings. We couldn’t have done it without you. And, judging from the comments received, the number of cameras and tripods in the aisles, and the length of time visitors spent at our site, you have much to be proud of.
