From October 18 – 22, 2011, more than 2,500 delegates attended the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s annual conference in Buffalo. To celebrate this major tourism event and the architectural wonders of Western New York – of which we are one – Blessed Trinity opened its doors for free, docent-guided tours on Saturday, October 22nd and Sunday, October 23rd. (Click HERE for more photos and information about the architecture of our Landmark building). The public was also invited to join us for worship services on the weekend.
From October 18 – 22, 2011, more than 2,500 delegates attended the National Trust for Historic Preservation’s annual conference in Buffalo. To celebrate this major tourism event and the architectural wonders of Western New York – of which we are one – Blessed Trinity opened its doors for free, docent-guided tours on October 22nd and 23rd. More than 65 visitors from as near as Woodbridge Avenue and as far as Massachusetts, Virginia, Wisconsin, San Francisco, CA (!) and Toronto, Canada joined us for Mass and/or tours of the church. Let us hope and pray that the enthusiasm and recognition around Buffalo and WNY’s magnificent sights will be an impetus to work toward building a community of peace, unity and compassion for all. The National Trust for Historic Preservation 2011 Conference in Buffalo put our city’s architectural treasury of civic, sacred and residential landmarks “front and center” for a national audience. In the aftermath of this high profile event, a new collaborative titled the Buffalo Alliance (the “Alliance”) for Sacred Places has been formed “to promote the preservation and appreciation of the art, architecture and history of Buffalo’s houses of worship.” The initial member organizations, which began meeting in January, 2012, are Blessed Trinity, the Buffalo Religious Arts Center, Corpus Christi RC Church, and First Presbyterian Church. The group chose to participate in The New York Landmarks Conservancy’s Sacred Sites Open House Weekend on May 19-20, 2012 as their first collaborative initiative. Over the two-day period, Blessed Trinity welcomed 98 visitors including residents of Rochester, Toronto, Pennsylvania and Michigan. To learn more about the other Alliance sites, click HERE. We would also appreciate your becoming a friend of our Alliance on its Facebook page.
The Alumni Committee was delighted with the turnout for our all-class reception following Mass on October 2, 2011. Among those who stopped by were representatives from classes spanning five decades. They included six sets of siblings and a Father-Daughter duo. Clate Steinwachs, representing the Class of 1930, was our oldest alumni in attendance. He was accompanied by his daughter, Ann Steinwachs Manganello, from the Class of ’61. The Class of ’64 had the best turnout, followed by a three-way tie among grads from ’55, ’59 & ’61. And – a very sincere “thank you” to Jerry Powers for organizing this year’s Split Club. Theresa Green and Mary Kathleen Keane were our winners, each taking home $300, and The Alumni also made a $600 donation to the Under This Roof Fund of Blessed Trinity Church from the split club proceeds.

On Sunday, June 5, our parish welcomed Shakiyah Dutton, Miles James, Annie Jarvis, Jimmie Jarvis, Benjamin Kelly, Fiona Kelly and Joshua McCardell to The Table of the Lord. Following Mass, they were honored at a special reception in St. Charles Hall, hosted by our Ladies Sodality.
We thank everyone who helped to make our Open House on May 21 and 22 so successful. Our greeters and docents welcomed 34 visitors, provided them with guided mini-tours, and answered their questions about our Landmark church building and parish history. The event was part of a year-long celebration of the twentieth-fifth anniversary of the New York Landmarks Conservancy’s Sacred Sites Program. Sacred Sites is the country’s oldest and largest statewide grant program to help landmark religious properties. Photos from many of the sites including Blessed Trinity have been posted on the Conservancy’s Facebook page; click HERE to view them.
Madonna Hartzell, a life-long parishioner of Blessed Trinity, received The Lay Award of St. Joseph the Worker at a diocesan ceremony which took place during Mass at St. Joseph Cathedral on Sunday, May 15th. She was also among the Award recipients honored at a reception at The Adam’s Mark, which followed the Mass. We congratulate Madonna and thank her for her dedicated and outstanding service to our parish community and to a number of other charitable organizations.
The parish is grateful for “her for many years — and many ways — of setting an example for all with her stewardship.” On behalf of the Blessed Trinity School Alumni, we salute her continued dedication to her parish and thank her for her contributions to our Alumni Committee.
The latest in the Trinity Concert Series took place at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 10, 2011 with a piano recital and delightful “teaching moment” by Frank Scinta. Mr. Scinta performed the works of early composers who wrote for harpsichord and fortepiano. These works of Croce, Zipoli, Yon, Frescobaldi and Clementi, some based on liturgical music themes, were described by Scinta as “perfect” in our Landmark church setting. We thank Mr. Scinta for generously donating the proceeds from the free-will offering to Blessed Trinity. A post-concert reception followed in St. Charles Hall. The organist and choirmaster at St. Louis R.C. Church, Scinta is one of WNY’s most active choral directors and music educators. As pianist, Mr. Scinta has appeared in solo and chamber recitals sponsored by Canisius College, Friends of Vienna, St. Paul’s Cathedral, International Institute, Grosvenor Society, Albright Knox Art Gallery, and WBFO-FM’s Opus Classics Live. His recordings appear on the Mode label.
