St. Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556) and St. Alphonsus Liguori (1695-1787), whose feast days we celebrate this week, are both depicted in a group of twelve figures identified as “Monks, Hermits, and Religious” in the dome of our church. St. Ignatius, fourth from the left (standing), was on his way to military fame before a debilitating war injury. His conversion experience began during his convalescence, and his writings during that time culminated in his greatest work, the “Spiritual Exercises.” Founder of the Jesuits, his feast day is July 31. St. Alphonsus, the first standing figure on the left, is pictured with a pen and book. Although he acquired fame as a writer, the founder of the Redemptorist Congregation is also remembered for his preaching and pastoral reforms. His feast is celebrated on August 1. The dome painting is by Buffalo-born artist Joseph Mazur; the photo by Gary Kelley.

News from our Parish Community

Women from Blessed Trinity enjoy hospitality of the Sisters of St. Mary Namur following Mary of Magdala Celebration.
Women from Blessed Trinity were among those attending a St. Mary of Magdala Celebration on Wednesday, July 22, at the Chapel of the Sisters of St. Mary Namur, 241 Lafayette Avenue, in Buffalo. The service, one of many held throughout the world on the feast of one of Jesus’ most influential apostles, also honored Sister Mary (Joan) Thompson, SSMN. The former Sister Mary Robert was an educator and author who died unexpectedly on July 7. Three selections from her book, “Mary of Magdala: Apostle and Preacher,” were read as part of the service. Click HERE for additional photos from the celebration.
Summer in the City ~ The annual CCCB Summer in the City celebration takes place this year on Tuesday, August 4, in conjunction with National Night Out 2015. Festivities begin at 5:00 p.m. in the St. Martin de Porres Church parking lot, 555 Northampton St. We invite you to help in whatever way you are able: bring a dessert or special dish (with serving utensil); help serve for a one-hour interval, beginning at 5:00 p.m.; help with clean-up at 8:00 p.m. For further information, call our parish co-ordinator, Dan Korchowsky, at 716-689-4783 or 716-465-4771.
More About Our Preservation Project ~ Earlier this year, Blessed Trinity Catholic Church received word from the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation that our application for funding to repair and restore major sections of our landmark church had been approved. With God’s help, we have begun the process of making these improvements happen in accordance with State and Federal standards. Firms wishing to submit proposals for architectural design services in connection with restoring our roof, nave windows and front entrance steps were required to demonstrate education, experience and expertise in historic preservation and the development of Sectarian Budgets as well as assurances of significant (30%) contracting opportunities for minority-and woman-owned business enterprises. Members of our building heritage committee and their advisers evaluated the proposals submitted in response and are currently in the process of selecting an architectural firm that will head up the restoration project over the next 18-24 months. Each member of our team takes his/her responsibilities very seriously, and they request that you continue to pray that their decisions will be inspired ones.

Care for Creation ~ Pope Francis began his encyclical, Praise be to you, my Lord: On Care for our Common Home, with the reminder that “St. Francis of Assisi reminds us that our common home is like a sister with who we share our life and a beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us.” (1) “St. Francis was a mystic and a pilgrim who lived in simplicity and in wonderful harmony with God, with others, with nature and with himself. He shows us just how inseparable the bond is between concern for nature, justice for the poor, commitment to society, and interior peace.” (10) Action: take time during this summer to enjoy nature and learn God’s creativity and love from this wondrous gift God has given us. Mary of Magdala
July 22
Mary of Magdala, in spite of the undeservedly tarnished reputation she held for fifteen centuries, is arguably the second most important woman in the New Testament. She is mentioned a total of fourteen times in all four accounts of the Gospel – more than most of the apostles — and modern scripture scholarship has now redeemed her reputation, embracing the earlier view of Saint Augustine who was the first to call her “the Apostle to the Apostles.” Mary is depicted in both painting and woodcarving in our church. Here, in a grouping of “Virgins and Widows” in the great dome, she appears as the first kneeling figure on the left. Photo credit: Gary Kelley.

News from our Parish Community
A Valued Partnership ~ On Saturday, June 27, delegates to the five-day National Jesuit Student Leadership Conference taking place in Buffalo included community service at Blessed Trinity in their busy agenda. We are grateful to the eleven young men and women who spent their morning cleaning the sacristy, choir loft, pews, and church floor. Our prayerful thanks go out to Daniel Ortega from Canisius College; Conor Gaffney, Marty Kyler, and Stefan Peterson from Creighton University; Gonzaga University’s Carolyn Cartwright; Sarah Graupman, Libbie Engels, and Danielle Jow from Marquette University; and Mary Mikko, Karic Jones, and Artona’ Millhouse from the University of Detroit Mercy. Before their return to Canisius, the group enjoyed a mini-tour of the church. While in Western New York, participants representing 28 Jesuit universities in the United States and St. John’s College in Belize also participated in leadership sessions, networking activities, small group discussions and social events, and visited attractions in downtown Buffalo and Niagara Falls. On behalf of the parish, we express our appreciation to Joe Van Volkenberg and his Canisius Campus Ministry Program for always thinking of us, and we continue to value our partnership with the local college.

Mission Co–op Collection ~ On the weekend of July 13-14, Rev. Patrice Kasonga will be here to share with us information about the missionary work in the Diocese of Mbujimayi, Congo. They work with about 22,500 Albinos who are marginalized because of the color of their skin, rejected by their families, threatened and isolated. Their Diocese has established educational and training centers to restore and promote their human dignity by helping them learn something about the origin of their skin color and teach them skills needed to serve their communities. Our Diocesan Mission Co-op Collection is an opportunity for us to provide some support for this much needed work in Congo.

Heavenly Father, on this holiday weekend we give thanks to you for the gift and blessing of the freedom we enjoy in our great nation. We praise you, Lord, for inspiring and guiding our founding fathers as they struggled to build our country and create a new way of living with the goal of freedom and justice for all.
We thank you, Lord, for the courageous self-sacrifice and generous spirit of countless people who have given their life’s blood in the defense of freedom and for the pursuit of justice. Keep us faithful to the tradition and example we have inherited. May we leave for the next generation a better world, prepared for the dawning of the Kingdom of your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, on God, forever and ever. Amen.

A Message of Gratitude from Catholic Charities ~ On behalf of our Appeal leadership team, volunteers, donors and those we serve, thank you for helping us achieve our 2015 Appeal goal! The overwhelming generosity we continue to experience from the Western New York community is the definition of ‘find good within’ and what it means to help others in need. We would not be able to impact the lives of more than 142,000 without your support. As we celebrate the independence of our country, the approximate 600 refugees Catholic Charities resettles each year are celebrating freedom from regimes or insurgents that seek to torture, imprison or kill them. Our diocese offers a safe haven to refugees through the Catholic Charities Immigration and Refugee Assistance Program. Here they find shelter, food, clothing, and a second chance for a new life. For more information on how you might help welcome a stranger, call 716-842-0270. Find Catholic Charities at http://www.ccwny.org, facebook.com/ccbuffalo and twitter.com/ccbuffalo.

Hardware from each door has been removed and refinished.
Restoration of Church Doors ~ Although it is not part of our grant project, it has become necessary to undertake restoration work on the doors of the church. Deterioration was especially noticeable following the harsh winter of 2014-15. They are currently undergoing restoration by Bryans Brothers Painting.
Preservation Project Proceeds ~ Earlier this year, Blessed Trinity Catholic Church received word from the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation that our application for funding to repair and restore major sections of our landmark church had been approved. With God’s help, we have begun the process of making these improvements happen in accordance with State and Federal standards. For several weeks, Blessed Trinity has been accepting proposals for architectural design services in connection with restoring our roof, nave windows and front entrance steps. Architects wishing to submit proposals were required to demonstrate education, experience and expertise in historic preservation and the development of Sectarian Budgets and also be able to include assurance of significant (30%) contracting opportunities for minority-and woman-owned business enterprises. Please pray for the members of our building heritage committee and their advisers who are currently evaluating the proposals submitted in response.

This is the year to make it happen and we need your help. Please go to http://www.nyscatholic.org and click on “Hot Issues: Action Alert” to urge lawmakers to vote in favor of the ETC. Thank You!

News from our Parish Community
Garden Party “Reblooms” ~ Parishioners who have questioned what happened to our annual spring garden party will be happy to learn that it’s back, beginning on Tuesday, June 16, at 6:30 p.m. We already have a core group of volunteers, thanks to Buffalo-Underground. After touring our church on May 31, they asked what they could do to help us, and gardening was the answer. We are now looking for parish volunteers to welcome and work along with them. Even if you can only spare an hour, please stop by with your garden gloves, kneeling pad and favorite weeding tools. Although our east side garden is currently ablaze with rhododendrons, iris and peonies, much remains to be done on the west side of the church and rectory and on the Dewey Avenue side of St. Charles Hall. We need you on Tuesday evening, June 16. If weather causes a cancellation, it will be noted on the Home Page of this web site and on our Facebook page.
Parish Council ~ There is an important meeting of the Parish Council on Wednesday, June 17, at 7 p.m. in St. Charles Hall. If you are a member of the Council, please make every effort to attend.
Bishop Malone has written a letter to area Catholics about the importance of the Education Tax Credit (“ETC”) legislation now before Members of the State Assembly for a vote. Time is of the essence as the current legislative term ends June 17. To read the complete text of his letter and learn why you should encourage passage, Click HERE.
Preservation Project Begins ~ Earlier this year, Blessed Trinity Catholic Church received word from the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation that our application for funding to repair and restore major sections of our landmark church had been approved. With God’s help, we now begin the process of making these improvements happen to meet State and Federal standards. Blessed Trinity is currently accepting proposals for architectural design services in connection with restoring our roof, nave windows and front entrance steps. Architects wishing to submit proposals must demonstrate education, experience and expertise in historic preservation and the development of Sectarian Budgets. Responses must also include assurance of significant (30%) contracting opportunities for minority-and woman-owned business enterprises. For a copy of the Request for Proposals (RFP), call 716-833-0301 or email us at blessedtrinity [dot] bflo [at] yahoo [dot] com. Proposals must be submitted to the Church by 4:00 p.m. on Monday, June 22, 2015.

An Evening Farmer’s Market Comes to Leroy Avenue ~ Every Wednesday evening, from 4-6 p.m., now through October 22nd, the Massachusetts Avenue Project’s Mobile Market will be coming to the FLARE!
