Clate Steinwachs celebrates his 99th birthday with daughter, Ann, and sons (l. to r.) David, Tom & Joe.
Congratulatory birthday wishes go out to Clayton Steinwachs who turned 99 years young on September 3. A member of the Class of 1930, Mr. Steinwachs is believed to be the School’s oldest living alumni. He received the well wishes of family and friends at a party in the home of his son, Joe. The Steinwachs children created an alumni reunion all by themselves. Joe is a member of the Class of 1969. His brother, Rev. David Steinwachs who traveled from Florida, is a member of the Class of 1961, as is his sister, Ann Steinwachs Manganello, who traveled from California. Brother Tom, also from California, graduated in 1963; their brother Carl, who was unable to attend, is a member of the Class of 1964. Clate is looking forward to greeting younger graduates of our school on September 27. Please don’t disappoint him.

News from our Parish Community
Employment Opportunities in Our Parish ~ After almost five years as Blessed Trinity Business Manager, Roy Laciura has decided to embark on a new career. We thank him for all his good work over the years, and wish him all the best in his new position at the WNY Catholic newspaper. Good luck and God bless, Roy!
In light of Roy’s move, the parish has decided to readjust staffing in the rectory. We plan to hire a part-time bookkeeper and a part-time secretary and initiate specific office hours for calling and appointments in the rectory. Can you help us with the following:
- Do you know someone with considerable bookkeeping experience (preferably according to diocesan procedures) willing to work 15-20 hours per week (flexible schedule) handling computerized accounts and reports? A job description for the position is available.
- Do you know someone with a pleasant personality and good computer skills interested in a part time (12-15 hours per week) position as a receptionist/secretary? Duties include answering the telephone and door, handling mail, photocopying, producing the bulletin, and related activities.
Compensation for both positions will be commensurate with training and experience. Please pass the word around, and if someone is interested, have him/her contact Bud Dick (716-832-2540) for more information.
Also, since it may take a little time to actually fill these paid positions, the Finance Committee would be very appreciative if any volunteers could step up to the plate and perform some of the above duties on a short-term, interim basis. Again, call Bud Dick if you are willing, and thank you very much for any help you can offer!

Henriette Delille (1813-1862)
The Ladies Sodality resumes its activities next Sunday, September 13, following the 10 AM Mass. Following announcements, Dr. Althea Porter will lead a discussion of the life of Venerable Henriette Delille (1813-1862), a Quadroon woman who chose to work among the poor in New Orleans. All women of the parish are invited to attend. Light refreshments will be served; please bring your favorite beverage mug. If you did not take home a copy of the essay about Henriette Delille last weekend, please look for one on the table near the usher’s pew. Enjoy your holiday weekend, and join us next Sunday, Sept. 13.
The Parish Council will meet on Wednesday, September 16, at 7:00 p.m. in St. Charles Hall.
Ministry to the Sick and Homebound ~ New York State law prohibits hospitals and nursing homes/rehab facilities from notifying a church when one of its parishioners is admitted for treatment. If such a situation arises with your loved one or family member, please contact the rectory to request visitation and administration of the sacraments. This also applies to someone receiving care in a home setting.
The B. T. Summer Fest was a great success! A huge, heartfelt “Thank You” goes to Bob Heicklen who planned and organized the event. The music by Neville Francis and the Riddim Posse was enjoyed by throughout the evening, the R&R BBQ food was delicious, and the Face Painting by Sheila K. Reigh went way beyond the kids! Many adult cheeks sported flowers, fish, even a Florida ocean-side scene. We are grateful to Bud and Mickey Dick and Gerry Gallisdorfer who set up the venue with Bob. Cathy Cummings treated us to home made ice cream (secret family recipe). Ticket handlers and clean-up crew included Sister Peg Gallagher, Madonna Hartzell, Lorraine Riles, Jessie Wells, Dan Korchowsky, the Brodfuehrer Three (Tom, Nik and Drew). It was a great end-of-summer gathering! To view additional photos from Summer Fest, Click HERE.

Project Homeless Connect is a one day event where those experiencing homelessness can come and connect with community based resources, dental and medical services, get a free haircut and so much more. It will take place on September 22 at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center. For several years, our parish supported the work of Sister Claire Edwards by collecting deodorant for this project. Now Catholic Charities is seeking donations of additional personal care products for Sept. 22. They are attempting to find individuals who will donate travel size personal care items or do a collection for these items within their offices or through their place of worship. Desired items include soap, shampoo, conditioner (including unopened hotel samples), disposable razors, band aids, dental floss, deodorant, hair brushes, toothpaste, and sanitary napkins. If you or someone you know would like to help or has items they would like to donate, please contact Renee Siepierski of Catholic Charities at 716-856-4494. It would be a wonderful tribute to our former parishioner, Sister Claire.
More About Our Preservation Project ~ Earlier this year, Blessed Trinity Catholic Church received word from the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation that our application for funding to repair and restore major sections of our landmark church had been approved. With God’s help, we have begun the process of making these improvements happen in accordance with State and Federal standards. Firms wishing to submit proposals for architectural design services in connection with restoring our roof, nave windows and front entrance steps were required to demonstrate education, experience and expertise in historic preservation and the development of Sectarian Budgets as well as assurances of significant (30%) contracting opportunities for minority-and woman-owned business enterprises. Members of our building heritage committee and their advisers evaluated the proposals submitted in response and are currently in the process of selecting an architectural firm that will head up the restoration project over the next 18-24 months. Each member of our team takes his/her responsibilities very seriously, and they request that you continue to pray that their decisions will be inspired ones.
Happy Labor Day ~ Nationwide, workers are celebrating the hard work that they put in year-round to keep themselves, their companies, and even our country running strong. Whether you give your time, your money or your support, we thank you for your continued hard work to help Catholic Charities serve 142,000 people in need in the eight counties of Western New York. Aug 20, 2015 | Alumni News & Photos

Our Annual Alumni Mass will be held at Blessed Trinity Church on Sunday, September 27, 2015 at 10:00 AM. We look forward to welcoming all Alumni, especially those celebrating significant anniversaries. A reception in St Charles Hall following the Mass provides an ideal opportunity to view school photos and memorabilia, reminisce and renew old acquaintances. As in past years, we ask those who are able to bring a food item to share at the reception.

James H. Stengel, ’63
1949-2015
Honoring our Deceased Members
As part of our Annual Mass we pause to remember all deceased alumni and faculty. The names of graduates who have passed away since last year’s Mass will be read. We will be remembering Evelyn M. Rofe, ’32; Paul V. Glauber, ’39; Robert G. Klein, ’40; Patricia Honeychurck Bonfanti, ’46; Ruth O’Connor Beehler and Jean A. Sloan Pritchard, ’49; Robert E. Steinke, ’51; Howard F. Gabriel, ’52 ; Anthony R. Sorgi, ’56; Dennis F. Lesinski, ’61; James H. Stengel, ’63; Dennis M. Long, ’64; Margaret E. (“Peggy”) O’Donnell, ’68; and Michael J. O’Donnell, ’73. May they rest in peace. Please inform the Committee if you become aware of other recent Alumni or faculty deaths.
Alumni Raffle

In conjunction with the September 27, 2015 alumni gathering, we are sponsoring our Sixth BT Alumni Raffle for the purpose of raising funds to help pay for restoration and repairs on our beautiful Church. Since 2009, our raffles have raised $12,145.00, half of which was donated to the Church, with the remaining monies (after Alumni Committee expenses) divided among the winners (2 each year). Over this same period, individual alumni have contributed more than $1,200.00 directly to Blessed Trinity, which is greatly appreciated. We want to continue this tradition and, with your help, we hope to have an equally successful fundraiser. Earlier this year, the parish learned that it had succeeded in obtaining State preservation funding. The grant requires a significant outlay of funds on the part of the church, bringing a new sense of urgency to our goal.
The drawing will take place at the reception following the Alumni Mass. You don’t need to be present to win, but you DO need to return your completed ticket stubs and check payable to “Blessed Trinity Alumni” no later than September 21, 2015. Tickets are $5.00 each or six (6) for $25.00. Last year our two winners, Marilyn Schimek and Julia Alessi, each received $575.00. This year it could be you! A sheet of six tickets will be enclosed with your alumni newsletter, which you should receive by the end of August. If you would like more for yourself, friends, family or other alumni, feel free to make copies of your sheet or contact Jerry Powers at 716-656-8657 or powersj2004 [at] aol [dot] com. Please help us promote this fundraiser as you have done in the past. Winners will be notified by mail and listed on the “School Alumni News and Photos”page at www.blessedtrinity.org and on the Blessed Trinity School Alumni Facebook page.

Members of the Class of 1964 celebrate their 50th.
All-Class Reception
The Alumni Committee continues to provide a time and place for you to reunite with former classmates and neighbors each year. No RSVP is required for the reception, so we can’t tell you who’s coming. Bobbe (Schmelzer) Lukasik maintains our database and will be happy to provide whatever information we have for your classmates and friends, enabling you to reach out and organize your own personal “reunion within the reunion.” Contact her at bertababe2 [at] yahoo [dot] com. In 2014, the Fiftieth Anniversary class of ’64 brought an anniversary cake and put together a display of class memorabilia. Our committee stands ready to assist the Class of ’65 (or ’45 or ’55 or ’75) with their own special touches.
Tour of the Church

Docent Tom Brodfuehrer, ’75, interprets iconography
Since 2011, the parish has made a concerted effort to promote Blessed Trinity as a destination site for tourists. A dedicated team of volunteer docents (including several alumni) help visitors appreciate the architectural features and religious symbolism displayed in our Landmark church building. If there is sufficient interest expressed by school alumni, we will be happy to conduct a 30 minute tour prior to Mass on September 27 as we did two years ago. Click HERE to indicate your interest, using “Church Tour” as the subject.
Wondering Why You Haven’t Heard from Us?
Every year we lose contact with some of our base because our mailing comes back marked: “Moved. Forwarding Expired.” If this year’s newsletter is forwarded to you from a previous address, you’ll be among the missing in 2016. To update or add your contact information, send the following information to bertababe2 [at] yahoo [dot] com: your name (including maiden name), year of graduation, mailing and email addresses, and a preferred phone number. We promise not to share your information except for purposes of class reunions.
In addition to this web page, the alumni have a Facebook page, “Blessed Trinity School Alumni,” which has allowed alumni to make personal connections and carry on “conversations.” Both sites provide class news and the latest information on scheduled events and activities. We encourage you to “like” us on Facebook and share your memories or class photos. (Graduates from the 1960s have been asking for the latter). If you have difficulty posting to the Facebook page or would like to add something to the web site, Click HERE and leave a message for the BT Web Diva, Margaret Stiffler Dick (’59).
We hope you will plan to join us on Sunday, September 27, 2015. If you have any questions or comments or would like to become an active member of the Alumni Committee, Click HERE and leave a message, using “Alumni” as the subject. For information about upcoming events at Blessed Trinity Church, including the 2015-16 Trinity Concert Series, Click HERE.

The Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary
August 22
This statue of the Blessed Mother was a gift to the parish in 1906. We have photographic proof of its existence in our original third floor church (over a store at Sanford and Dewey). Known to parishioners as “Our Lady of the Home and Neighborhood” for many years, she was refurbished in the early part of this decade by Todd Treat and made her return to the church for 2011 Midnight Mass.
We’ve Lost the Wednesday Farmer’s Market. With regret, we announce that the Massachusetts Avenue Project’s Mobile Market will no longer be coming to FLARE on Wednesday afternoons. Unfortunately, there just wasn’t enough neighborhood support to sustain it. However, they will continue to bring their “farmer’s market on wheels” to nearby Elim Christian Fellowship, 70 Chalmers Avenue on Thursday evenings, from 4-6 p.m. Take advantage of this opportunity to shop for fresh produce from local growers, and prove to grocery store operators that we could support a year-round store in our neighborhood! For more information, Click HERE.
The Catholic League Appeal for Religious Assistance to Poland will take place next weekend, August 15 – 16. The proceeds for this collection will help to keep open the Polish Pontifical Institute and the Polish Pontifical College, both in Rome, where the Bishops of Poland send talented priests for further studies. There is tremendous need to have a well educated clergy. While in Rome these priests have the opportunity to study under highly regarded scholars in the areas of Theology, Scripture, Canon Law and Liturgy. Your generosity will be gratefully appreciated.
Commentary on Pope Francis Encyclical, Laudato Si ~ St. Francis, faithful to Scripture, invites us to see nature as a magnificent book in which God speaks to us and grants us a glimpse of his infinite beauty and goodness. “Through the greatness and the beauty of creatures one comes to know by analogy their maker” (Wis. 13:5); indeed, “his eternal power and divinity have been made known through his works since the creation of the world” (Rom. 1:20). Rather than a problem to be solved, the world is a joyful mystery to be contemplated with gladness and praise. Action: During this season of summer, be aware of the beauty that surrounds us, see beauty as a “magnificent book in which God speaks to us….” Ask yourself: Am I aware that this precious gift, Earth and all of creation, are a gift? Am I listening to God’s Spirit within me to hear what God is asking me to do to care for all people and all creatures and all creation? Read Pope Francis’ encyclical and hear what the Pope is asking us to do. Click HERE to read the encyclical in English.

An Evening Farmer’s Market Comes to Leroy Avenue ~ Every Wednesday evening, from 4-6 p.m., now through October 22nd, the Massachusetts Avenue Project’s Mobile Market will be coming to the FLARE! Rain or shine, you’ll find “a farmers market on wheels” in the driveway next to FLARE. On Thursday evenings, from 4-6 p.m., it will be at nearby Elim Christian Fellowship, 70 Chalmers Avenue. Take advantage of this twice a week opportunity to shop for fresh produce from local growers right in your neighborhood! For more information, Click HERE.

Women from Blessed Trinity enjoy hospitality of the Sisters of St. Mary Namur following Mary of Magdala Celebration.
Women from Blessed Trinity were among those attending a St. Mary of Magdala Celebration on Wednesday, July 22, at the Chapel of the Sisters of St. Mary Namur, 241 Lafayette Avenue, in Buffalo. The service, one of many held throughout the world on the feast of one of Jesus’ most influential apostles, also honored Sister Mary (Joan) Thompson, SSMN. The former Sister Mary Robert was an educator and author who died unexpectedly on July 7. Three selections from her book, “Mary of Magdala: Apostle and Preacher,” were read as part of the service. Click HERE for additional photos from the celebration.

Catholic Biblical Studies Program ~ For those who’ve been part of it, this opportunity is often credited with being a “life changer,” sometimes bringing people back to a meaningful experience of faith, sometimes carrying them through difficult challenges and personal crises and always opening the door to meeting remarkable women and men. It has quietly but steadily continued for nearly three decades and now is taking a slightly altered form, adapted to the needs of busy people. An introductory Bible study, “Israel Becomes God’s People,” will start in September. This is to be the first of three seven-week sessions planned for the school year 2015-2016. The locations will be:
- John Vianney Parish, 2950 Southwestern Blvd., Orchard Park on Wednesday mornings from 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon;
- Vincent de Paul Parish, 6441 Seneca St., Springbrook on Wednesday evenings from 7:00pm to 9:00pm.
- The Newman Center (UB North), 495 Skinnersville Rd., Amherst on Thursday afternoons from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Registration information with details about specific class dates and cost is available on the website www.cbstudies.org and by phone at (716) 871-9180. You can also learn about other upcoming events sponsored by the Catholic Biblical Studies Program involving nationally known speakers and teachers. (Our parishioner, Elsieta Chapman, has been participating in this program. She would be happy to share her experience and answer any questions you may have.
