News from our Parish Community
Our Trinity Festival Weekend – a three-day celebration of our parish feast day – has concluded with excellent reviews and relieved committee chairs. On Friday evening, more than 100 enjoyed William Maddox, the acclaimed organist and music director at Toronto’s Yorkminster Park Baptist Church, in recital on the church’s 1927 Tellers-Kent organ. Their appreciation of his performance was enhanced by Gary Kelley’s camera work in the loft, enabling audience members to view Mr. Maddox’s manual dexterity and fancy footwork on a movie screen in the sanctuary. The post-recital reception provided everyone an opportunity to visit with Mr. Maddox. Saturday’s church tours attracted a steady flow of visitors, much to the delight of docents and greeters. Rev. Victor Ibhawa celebrated Sunday’s Mass in honor of the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity, with individual members of the assembly presenting the Prayer of the Faithful intercessions. Musical anthems included Michael Bedford’s “Prayer to the Trinity,” sung by the parish choir. More than 80 of those in attendance at the Mass stayed to enjoy a parish brunch.
The Sodality’s Annual Dinner is this coming Wednesday, June 14. All women of the parish are invited to join us for the evening, beginning at 6pm in St. Charles Hall; friends are welcome. Our Flag-Day themed holiday supper will include baked chicken, Italian sausage with peppers & onions, pulled pork with rolls, baked beans, roasted potatoes, and chef salad, all prepared by Carmen’s Catering, with all-American apple pie for dessert. Father Victor will be our guest and dinner speaker, with a presentation honoring the one-hundredth anniversary of the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima. The price of the dinner is $20 per person. Anointing of the Sick ~ The next communal anointing of the sick and well-aging will take place on Sunday, June 18, immediately after Mass and continue on the third Sunday of each month. Please feel free to invite those who are chronically ill or facing surgery and who would like to be anointed.
Bible Study ~ Our Bible Study group will meet on Monday evening, June 19, at 7pm in St. Charles Hall. Please read from the booklet, Genesis 1-11, God Makes a Start (pages 38-49) on the topic of Distrust, Disobedience and Dismay. Copies may be obtained from Father Victor. Make sure to bring your Bible and copy of Agape: A guide for the Study of Sacred Scripture. For more information, contact Althea Porter at 716-316-8395.
Parish Council ~ Our final regularly scheduled meeting until September will take place on Wednesday, June 21, at 7pm in St. Charles Hall. Council members are reminded that we have several important agenda items to resolve, so please make every effort to attend.

Webster on the occasion of their ordination to the priesthood and pray for God’s blessings on them and on their ministries. Before beginning his studies at Christ the King Seminary in East Aurora, Father Webster was our parish business manager.

Trinity Festival Weekend ~ Next weekend we celebrate our parish feast day. The three-day event begins with an organ recital on Friday evening, June 9, at 7:30pm. Our recitalist, William Maddox, has chosen pieces to “showcase” our 1927 Tellers-Kent pipe organ and highlight the church building’s acoustics. But the weekend is also an opportunity to showcase our welcoming parish family by bringing a friend to church. Invite someone to: experience the sound of music on our recently tuned pipe organ, find out why our church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places with a guided tour on Saturday, June 10, from 2-4pm, and celebrate our faith and the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity at the 10am Mass on Sunday, June 11. You can also bring your guests to brunch in St. Charles Hall following the Mass, but do help the volunteers who are preparing the food by returning your reservation form no later than Wed., June 7. Prayerful Thanks to Melanie Chimento and the wonderful members of Buffalo Underground, including Catherine Doering, Rick Hull, Norbert Muller, Patrick Rogers, Mary Jane Ross, Larry Sullivan and Alana Weeks. They brought their enthusiasm, energy and gardening tools to Blessed Trinity Wednesday evening, May 24, and applied all three in helping to remove weeds, overgrown shrubs, and plants gone wild. We also express our appreciation for the parish volunteers who worked along with them: Judy Casassa, Bud and Mickey Dick, Dan Korchowsky, Dorothy Manuppelli, Kathy Press, and Sr. Liz Savage. There’s still work to be done, but thanks to the efforts of our maintenance man, Dennis Pawlikowski, and these dedicated volunteers, we’re off to a great start this spring.
Pentecost Sunday: The Holy Spirit send seven special gifts to us. By calling upon these gifts, we are both made aware of God’s will for us, and are given the strength to pursue it. Our Trinity Festival Weekend is only 2 weeks away, June 9-11. The lead-off event in honor of our parish feast day is an organ recital on Friday evening, June 9, at 7:30pm. William Maddox, acclaimed music director at Toronto’s famous Yorkminster Park Baptist Church, is returning to perform a benefit recital for the church’s Under This Roof fund. Mr. Maddox has been a friend of the parish since his first visit in 2011. His praise of our Landmark building and what he termed “its splendid acoustic” provided international support for the parish’s applications for State preservation funding. This is our chance to return the favor by attending his recital. Mr Maddox has selected pieces that “showcase various colors” of our 1927 Tellers-Kent pipe organ and highlight the church’s acoustics. Those of us who were lucky enough to hear him practice on May 8 know you are in for a sensory treat, and you’ll have a chance to visit with him at a post-concert reception. A free-will offering for the Under This Roof fund will be taken; the suggested donation is $15. On Saturday, June 10, from 2-4pm, invite your friends to join you for a guided tour of our Landmark church. Find out from our knowledgeable docents what makes Blessed Trinity an architectural and historic landmark. Then celebrate the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity at the 10am Mass on Sunday, June 11, and bring your guests to brunch in St. Charles Hall. Brunch reservations are requested by June 7.

Sacred Sites Weekend ~ A large THANK YOU to all the volunteers who acted as docents, greeters and salespeople at our Sacred Sites Open House last weekend: Vera Andrew, Eleanor Ash, Tom Brodfuehrer, Mickey Dick, Tom Dinder, Vontrese Draper, Derik Kane, Mary Karlis, Dan Korchowski, Toni Maus, Marianne Pernick, Sr. Liz Savage, and Nancy Yager. All of our visitors were quite impressed with the beauty and significance of our very special church. The next time we “throw the doors open” will be Saturday, June 10, as part of our Trinity Festival Weekend celebration. We will need volunteers for that too. Prayerful Thanks to Melanie Chimento and the wonderful members of Buffalo Underground, including Catherine Doering, Rick Hull, Norbert Muller, Patrick Rogers, Mary Jane Ross, Larry Sullivan and Alana Weeks. They brought their enthusiasm, energy and gardening tools to Blessed Trinity Wednesday evening, May 24, and applied all three in helping to remove weeds, overgrown shrubs, and plants gone wild. We also express our appreciation for the parish volunteers who worked along with them: Judy Casassa, Bud and Mickey Dick, Dan Korchowsky, Dorothy Manuppelli, Kathy Press, and Sr. Liz Savage. There’s still work to be done, but thanks to the efforts of our maintenance man, Dennis Pawlikowski, and these dedicated volunteers, we’re off to a great start this spring.

A Parish “Garden Party” is set for Wednesday, May 24. Members of the local meet-up group, Buffalo Underground, have volunteered to help weed and plant our church gardens. We are hoping for a turnout of parishioners to work along with them. Please plan to join us on Wednesday evening, May 24, beginning at 6pm. Bring your favorite gardening tools and work gloves. Rain date is June 5.
Thursday, May 25, is the feast of The Ascension of the Lord. There will be 6pm Mass but no 11am Mass.
Summer Mass Schedule goes into effect on June 1. Please note that there will be NO Mass on Mondays, and the Tuesday Mass time is changing to 11:00am. Masses on Wednesday through Friday will continue at 11:00am.
William Maddox in recital at Blessed Trinity

Our Trinity Festival Weekend is only 3 weeks away, June 9-11. In honor of our feast day, Trinity Sunday, the parish is planning 3 days of events and opportunities for you to “bring a friend to church.” Our lead-off event is an organ recital on Friday evening, June 9, at 7:30pm. William Maddox, music director at Toronto’s Yorkminster Park Baptist Church, is returning to perform a benefit recital, a promise he made in 2011 when he first visited Blessed Trinity as part of a tour of Buffalo churches. He has chosen pieces that “showcase various colors” of our 1927 Tellers-Kent pipe organ and what he has termed the church’s “splendid acoustic.” Those of us who were lucky enough to hear him practice on May 8 know you are in for a sensory treat, and you’ll have a chance to visit with Mr. Maddox at a post-concert reception. A free-will offering for the Under This Roof Fund will be taken. On Saturday afternoon, June 10 (2-4pm), you and your friends can take a guided tour of our landmark church. If you’ve ever wondered about the seemingly haphazard arrangement of bricks or the terra cotta decorations on the church façade, here is your chance to ask questions of our knowledgeable docents. Then celebrate the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity at the 10am Mass on Sunday, June 11, and bring your guests to brunch in St. Charles Hall.

Sacred Sites Weekend ~ A sincere “thank you” to everyone who facilitated our participation in the New York Landmarks Conservancy’s Seventh Annual Sacred Sites Open House Weekend on May 20/21 by volunteering as docents, greeters, and friendly hosts. As usual, first-time visitors were overwhelmed by our art and architecture. However, what we really love are visitors’ comments about how much they enjoyed the experience of meeting the volunteers who shared Blessed Trinity’s story. And if you weren’t able to help this weekend, you’ll have another opportunity to volunteer when we again welcome visitors during our Trinity Festival Weekend, June 9-11.

Hope Award received by Blessed Trinity Parish from PeacePrints in recognition of contributions to Christmas Prisoner Gift Project.
Blessed Trinity receives Hope Award ~ On Friday, April 28, PeaceprintsTM of WNY honored Blessed Trinity Church with its prestigious Hope Award in recognition of our many years of hosting and contributing to the annual Christmas Prisoner Gift Project. The presentation took place at the organization’s annual awards dinner held at Kloc’s Grove in West Seneca. PeaceprintsTM of WNY provides positive experiences for individuals in prison and former offenders transitioning back to the community. The Hope Award is given to a community partner who, through volunteers, donations and community service, instills hope in their residents and furthers programs for ex-offenders. Many of our parishioners have been active in this project, bringing in thousands of packages of hot chocolate, decorating bags, assembling donations, packing bags and boxes, loading trucks, etc. A sincere “Thank You” to everyone, especially Amy Johnson, who has coordinated BT’s efforts, in addition to filling countless pews with donated books. Special thanks go to Jan Burns, overall coordinator of the project, for her tireless and enthusiastic approach to continuing the legacy of Sister Karen Klimczak who initiated the prison project. In his closing remarks at the Awards Dinner, Father Victor assured the group that we look forward to continuing to host this wonderful program.

Organ Recital

William Maddox, organist and music director at Toronto’s Yorkminster Park Baptist Church, will perform a benefit recital at our Landmark church on Friday, June 9, 2017 at 7:30 p.m.
Mr. Maddox will perform Romantic French works and orchestral transcriptions to showcase various colors of Blessed Trinity’s original Tellers-Kent pipe organ, built in 1927. In honor of the parish feast day (Trinity Sunday, June 11), he will include the Bach ‘St. Anne’ Fugue, considered “a hommage to the Trinity” with its “three subjects, in three sections, with time signatures dividing by three for each section.” His performance will also feature commentary on the organ, the selections, and the church building’s attributes, which provide what Mr. Maddox describes as a “splendid acoustic.”
Active as a recitalist, he has appeared in recital throughout Canada and internationally, including appearances at Roy Thomson Hall, St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York, the Royal Parish Church of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, London, Washington’s National Cathedral, the Sao Bento Organ Festival in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and most recently and at the Cleveland Museum of Art. In addition, his recitals and recordings have been heard on nationally broadcast programs of the CBC and American and Brazilian Public Radio.
A member of the Buffalo Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, Mr. Maddox has also served as Instructor of Organ in the School of Music at Queen’s University at Kingston, Ontario, and is actively involved as a consultant to many churches regarding the tonal design and console appointments of their new instruments.
The recital will be followed by a reception, allowing audience members an opportunity to meet and talk with the Mr. Maddox.
Although there are no tickets for his performance, a free-will offering for the church’s Under This Roof preservation fund will be taken, with a suggested $15 per person donation.

The weekend celebration will culminate on Sunday, June 11, when the public is invited to join parishioners and their guests in observing Trinity Sunday at a special 10 a.m. Mass celebrated by Rev. Volunteers needed for Sacred Sites Weekend ~ On May 20-21, Blessed Trinity will participate in the New York Landmarks Conservancy’s Seventh Annual Sacred Sites Open House weekend. We will join dozens of houses of worship all over the state showcasing their landmark buildings. It’s an opportunity to highlight BT as a perfect example of art preserved by faith and faith preserved in art. WE NEED VOLUNTEERS!! The Open House will take place on Saturday, May 20 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM (before 4:30 Mass), and on Sunday, May 21 from 12:00 noon (after 10:00 Mass) to 2:00 PM. We will need docents, greeters, sellers, and general hosts. If you have worked any of our Open Houses in the past, you know everything you need to do. If you are new to Open House tours, we will happily train you. If you can help on either of these two days, please fill out one of the forms on the Communion rail indicating what type of role you are willing to play and which date/time you are available. The Parish Council meets this Wednesday, May 17, at 7pm in St. Charles Hall. Summary of April 19 Parish Council Meeting: Acknowledged John Curtin for his efforts in making Holy Week and Easter so special; reviewed Agape plans. The PeacePrints Hope award was announced, along with a date for outdoor assistance with planting by Buffalo Underground. Prayer Partners ~ The CCCB’s annual Pot Luck dinner and opportunity to meet your prayer partner will take place on Thursday, May 11, at St. Columba-Brigid Parish. All women of the parish are invited as guests of the Holy Name, but please remember that reservations are due by this Wednesday, May 10. Volunteers needed for Sacred Sites Weekend ~ On May 20-21, Blessed Trinity will participate in the New York Landmarks Conservancy’s Seventh Annual Sacred Sites Open House weekend. We will join dozens of houses of worship all over the state showcasing their landmark buildings. It’s an opportunity to highlight BT as a perfect example of art preserved by faith and faith preserved in art. WE NEED VOLUNTEERS!! The Open House will take place on Saturday, May 20 from 2:00 to 4:00 PM (before 4:30 Mass), and on Sunday, May 21 from 12:00 noon (after 10:00 Mass) to 2:00 PM. We will need docents, greeters, sellers, and general hosts. If you have worked any of our Open Houses in the past, you know everything you need to do. If you are new to Open House tours, we will happily train you. If you can help on either of these two days, please fill out one of the forms on the Communion rail indicating what type of role you are willing to play and which date/time you are available. Blessed Trinity receives Hope Award ~ On Friday, April 28, PeaceprintsTM of WNY honored Blessed Trinity Church with its prestigious Hope Award in recognition of our many years of hosting and contributing to the annual Christmas Prisoner Gift Project. The presentation took place at the organization’s annual awards dinner held at Kloc’s Grove in West Seneca. PeaceprintsTM of WNY provides positive experiences for individuals in prison and former offenders transitioning back to the community. The Hope Award is given to a community partner who, through volunteers, donations and community service, instills hope in their residents and furthers programs for ex-offenders. Summary of April 19 Parish Council Meeting ~ Acknowledged John Curtin for his efforts in making Holy Week and Easter so special; reviewed Agape plans. The PeacePrints Hope award was announced, along with a date for outdoor assistance with planting by Buffalo Underground. Trinity Sunday (June 11) is being planned, and we look forward to a June 9 organ recital by William Maddox. Finally, a date is being determined for an upcoming “Bring a Friend or Neighbor to Church Sunday.” The next Parish Council meeting is Wednesday, May 17, at 7pm in St. Charles Hall.
Anointing of the Sick ~ Beginning on May 21, there will be anointing of the sick and well-aging immediately after Mass. Anointing will continue on the third Sunday of each month. Please feel free to remain after Mass for anointing, and also invite those who are chronically ill or facing surgery and who would like to be anointed.
“Garden Party” Set for May 24 ~ If you love to garden or just enjoy working outdoors, please mark your calendar for 6pm Monday May 24. A group of parishioners will be joining forces with volunteers from Buffalo Underground to work on sprucing up the church gardens. Rain date is June 5.

Parish Agape Feast ~ Thanks to everyone who attended our first Agape Feast on April 23, especially those of you who prepared food, helped to serve it, or stayed to assist with clean-up. Congratulations to Jack Curtin, this year’s recipient of the Lay Award of St. Joseph the Worker, as well as our bingo workers and members of the choir and finance council. They were presented with certificates by Father Victor in recognition of their dedication to the parish. Father Victor promises to honor additional parish volunteers at future events of this nature.

Slow Roll Buffalo ~ Join with other cyclists for Slow Roll Bi-weekly Monday Evenings. The group assembles for the first roll of the season on Monday, May 8 at Martin Luther King Park at 6:30pm and returns to that location by 8pm for an after-party. Please be advised that some streets might be closed to traffic during those hours as approximately 1,000 bicyclists roll through. Religious Education Program ~ Palm Sunday marked the last class for this year’s Religious Education program. We have been delighted to spend this Lenten journey with the children of Blessed Trinity. They are faith-filled and each is an asset to our parish. Parents: please look for upcoming information regarding our confirmation program as well as our expanding youth program for the 2017-2018 school year. We will be sending along a brief questionnaire in the weeks to come for feedback on how you would like to see our program change to meet your family’s needs. We are deeply grateful for your willingness to help us develop a faith formation program that is meaningful for our parish. Three Choirs Festival Concert ~ Sunday, May 7, 4pm, at St. Joseph Cathedral. The Cathedral Choir will be joined by the Amherst High School Concert Chorale, Justin Pomietlarz, director, and the Hamburg High School Concert Choir, Norm Zogaib, director. Each choir will perform several selections separately, as well as three combined pieces. Amherst and Hamburg are among the very best high school choirs in western New York, and they, along with our Cathedral Choir, will surely delight all who attend. There will be a feel-will [sic] offering. A reception in the Msgr. Britt Room will follow the concert sponsored by the Greater Buffalo Friends of Music. St. Joseph Cathedral is located in downtown Buffalo at 50 Franklin Street.

Lutheran-Catholic Study Day (Reformation Anniversary Commemoration) ~ The Lutheran Judicatory of WNY and the Catholic Diocese of Buffalo are co-sponsoring an ecumenical study day on Friday, May 19, from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Christ the King Seminary, 711 Knox Road, East Aurora, NY. Dr. Susan Wood, SCL, a member of the national Lutheran-Catholic dialogue, will keynote shared discussions of two recent anniversary statements, From Conflict to Communion (2013) and Declaration on the Way (2015). On May 20 and 21, Blessed Trinity will participate in the New York Landmarks Conservancy’s Seventh Annual Sacred Sites Open House Weekend, inviting the public to experience our house of worship as a repository of faith, art, and history. Members of our docent team will be on hand Saturday, May 20, from 2 – 4 p.m. and on Sunday, May 21, from Noon to 2 p.m. to explain the unique features that make Blessed Trinity Church the purest replication of 12th century Lombard-Romanesque architecture in the United States. You’ll be able to examine its handmade bricks set in a style dating back to the Middle Ages, learn about the elaborate display of medieval iconography on the terra cotta portico, and marvel at more than 2,000 symbols summarizing Christian beliefs in ceramic tiles, paintings, sculpture and locally designed and manufactured stained glass windows.
Blessed Trinity, listed on the National Register of Historic Place, is wheelchair accessible.

Recitalist William Maddox
Organ Recital

William Maddox, organist and music director at Toronto’s Yorkminster Park Baptist Church, in recital on Friday, June 9, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. Mr. Maddox will perform Romantic French works and orchestral transcriptions to showcase various colors of the Blessed Trinity’s original Tellers-Kent pipe organ, built in 1927.
Active as a recitalist, Mr. Maddox has been heard in recital in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and Brazil, as well as on the CBC. He has also served as Instructor of Organ in the School of Music at Queen’s University at Kingston, where his students were recipients of numerous University and national scholarships and awards.
Proceeds of this recital benefit “Under This Roof,” a sustaining fund created in 2002 for the preservation and restoration of our architectural landmark and house of prayer. There is a suggested donation of $15 for this recital.
