Blessed Trinity Site of Mass Mob IX, March 22, 2015

MassMobIX

Not quite sure what a “Mass Mob” is? It is simply an invitation extended via social media “to support and experience some of Buffalo’s wonderful churches….” The idea sprang from the successful Buffalo Cash Mob, which was an attempt to support locally owned businesses by encouraging people to shop there on a given weekend.

As explained on its web site, www.buffalomassmob.wordpress.com: “Our city is known for its incredible architecture. Part of this architectural mix are the many churches located throughout Buffalo. These houses of worship helped shape and define the city as we know it.  It is Buffalo Mass Mob’s hope to help create more awareness and appreciation for sacred sites in Western New York through the simple act of experiencing them in their intended purpose and encourage people to attend Mass more at Buffalo’s historic churches.”

The first Mass Mob took place at St. Adalbert Basilica in November 2013. Since then, the Mass Mob has visited seven city churches from South Buffalo to Black Rock. Blessed Trinity will be the site of Mass Mob IX on Sunday, March 22.

Still not sure you want to be involved? A spokesperson for Holy Angels Church on Buffalo’s West Side described Mass Mob VII as “a great experience from start to finish.” We’ll add more details about our plans for the day as they become available, but please plan to join us for worship on Sunday, March 22, at 10:00 a.m.

For those of you who attended Mass Mob VIII at St. Casimir, you will surely want to follow-up with Mass Mob IX. Like St. Casimir, the architect for Blessed Trinity was also Chester Oakley (along with Albert Schallmo) . Both buildings were under construction at the same time, St. Casimir being completed in 1926 and Blessed Trinity in 1928. The latter is considered the purest replication of 12th century Lombard-Romanesque architecture in the United States. “celebrating community through music.”
Sunday, March 29, 2015 at 3:00 p.m.

Samuel.Coleridge.Taylor.with.textOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOn Sunday, March 29, 2015, the Camerata di Sant’ Antonio will perform at Blessed Trinity Church as part of the church’s Trinity Concert Series of “beautiful music in a beautiful space.” Under the direction of Christopher Weber, the professional music ensemble will present Mozart Noir, celebrating the music of gifted Black Composers.

Founded in 2002, the Camerata seeks to present concerts that preserve and celebrate the cultural heritage of our community, featuring premier works in every performance. Selections will include the U.S. premier of the Haitian Dance Suite by Samuel Coleridge Taylor (aka the “Black Mahler”), and works of the Chevalier de Saint George (known as the “Mozart noir”), whose music inspired the young Wolfgang Amadeus and made music history.

Blessed Trinity, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is considered to be the purest replication of twelfth-century Lombard-Romanesque architecture in the United States. The building has also gained international recognition for its “splendid acoustic,” making it an ideal setting in which to experience the music of the Camerata.

Church docents will provide pre-concert tours of the Buffalo Landmark and its “beautiful space” from 2:15 – 2:45 p.m. There will also be a reception in the parish hall following the concert, courtesy of the Amberleigh Retirement Community at Williamsville.

Tickets for the concert are $17 in advance (716-856-3626) or at the door. Funding from the City of Buffalo will provide free admission for students under the age of 15 when accompanied by an adult or high school students with valid school identification.

Blessed Trinity is located at 317 Leroy Avenue (between Fillmore and Grider) and is wheelchair accessible with secured off-street parking.

5th Sunday in Ordinary Time – Week of February 8, 2015

Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, February 11. The painting on the wall behind the Altar of the Blessed Virgin to the left of the Sanctuary at Blessed Trinity is of the Virgin Mary “seen fulfilling the prophecy of Genesis (3:15), with the serpent under her feet.” The figure to the left of Mary is “St. Bernadette Soubirous (1844-1879), to whom Our Lady appeared at Lourdes, France in 1858…. The message of Lourdes was really an invitation to trust in the power of prayer regardless of how desperate the situation is, to have great concern for the sick, and to sincerely trust in the concern of Mary for the followers of her son.” (Rev. Walter Kern’s Guidebook to Blessed Trinity Roman Catholic Church, p. 44).

Buffalo Mass Mob Comes to Blessed Trinity ~ We are happy to announce that we have been chosen as the site for Buffalo Mass Mob IX on Sunday, March 22. The group has even created a souvenir t-shirt to commemorate its visit to our Landmark church, with proceeds benefiting our parish. To purchase a shirt — they are $20 — click HERE. If you’re not quite sure what a “Mass Mob” is, view our “Upcoming Events” post. Additional details about what to expect on March 22 and how you can help will be provided as they become available.

Prayer Partner Information ~ If you signed-up for the annual Lenten Prayer Partner program, you should be receiving the name of a parishioner from one of the Catholic Churches of Central Buffalo (CCCB) or St. Michael’s, and asked to pray for that person and their intentions during Lent. In return, that person will be praying for you. Why do we do this? It’s rather simple. Jesus told us that “if two or more agree on earth about anything for which they pray, it shall be granted to them by my Father.” (Mt. 18:19,20). This helps us see the importance of praying with and for one another.  If you neglected to sign up but still wish to participate, call Sister Maureen Harris at 897-9948, ext. 114 or 892-2471 and ask to be added as a prayer partner. Once you receive the name of your partner, you can include them in a daily prayer of remembrance, at Mass, or during your own individual time of prayer. If they give their phone number, you can make a personal contact to introduce yourself and exchange intentions, but this is not required.

Sodality Dues Reminder ~ Membership in the Ladies Sodality runs with the calendar year. Please remember to pay your dues by February 22 so that our membership chair may update the roster and email group/telephone tree. To learn more about our women’s group, Click HERE.

Scholarship Money Available for Catholic School Education ~ The BISON Children’s Scholarship Fund, a privately funded tuition assistance program for children in grades K-8, has scholarships available for the 2015-16 school year. Financially eligible families can fill out an eligibility form on the BISON website. The eligibility form deadline is February 28. With a maximum award of $1,500.00, this is a great opportunity for families who desire a Catholic education for their children but may be unable to afford it. For more information, visit http://www.bisonfund.com or call 1-888-216-8380.

Pope Francis’ World Day of Peace message on January 1 was entitled “No Longer Slaves, But Brothers and Sisters,” which reminds all followers of Jesus that human trafficking is a crime against humanity and that we, who are brothers and sisters to all, need to care for our brothers and sisters who are kept in slavery throughout our world. To learn more about the Catholic Church’s response to this issue, go to www.usccb.org/anti-trafficking. The Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace and the International Union of Superiors General has designated February 8 as the international day of prayer and awareness against human trafficking. “That the dignity of all of God’s children will be protected, we pray to the Lord.”

Catholic Charities 2015 Goal ~ Find Good Within. Share God’s Goodness. Last year, through the generous support of donors throughout Western New York, Catholic Charities was able to positively impact the lives of children, families and seniors in our community with basic needs like food, clothing and shelter, to mental health counseling and educational services. Bishop Richard Malone has announced our goal of $10.9 million and patron saint of the 2015 Appeal. St. Francis of Assisi was a man of action whose simplicity of life extended to ideas and deeds. When you support the Appeal, you are “finding good within” and offering comfort and relief to people in need. Catholic Relief Services Collection ~ “Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.” (Mt 25:40). Today, we are reminded that Jesus identified himself with our poorest brothers and sisters. The Catholic Relief Services Collection serves Jesus in the victims of human trafficking, in those who suffer from unjust laws, and in those who need pastoral care and humanitarian assistance across the globe. Your support of the January 24/25 collection helps Jesus in disguise. Please be generous.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration ~ On Sunday, January 18 at 10:30 a. m. Blessed Trinity hosted the Diocesan Mass honoring Martin Luther King, Jr.  “Rebuilding the Bridge: Answering God’s Call” was the theme of the celebration with Principal Celebrant Bishop Richard Malone and Guest Homilist Rev. Brother Henry Fulmer, OFM, from St. Joseph Church in the Diocese of Charleston, SC. Proceeds of an offertory collection at the Mass will be used to fund the Martin Luther King Scholarship Fund, as will those from a basket raffle at the reception that followed. Blessed Trinity Site of Mass Mob IX, March 22, 2015

MassMobIX

It’s a great time for Blessed Trinity! Immediately following the inspirational diocesan-wide celebration of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at Blessed Trinity on January 18th, we learned that we have been chosen as the site for Buffalo Mass Mob IX!! Watch this space for more fun details as they become available, and plan to join us for worship on March 22nd.

Samuel.Coleridge.Taylor.with.textOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe Camerata di Sant’ Antonio, under the direction of Christopher Weber, presents Mozart Noir celebrating the music of gifted Black Composers.

From 2:15-2:45 p.m., church docents will provide concert-goers with tours of this Buffalo Landmark, considered to be the purest replication of Lombard-Romanesque Architecture in the United States. There will also be a post-concert reception in the parish hall, courtesy of the Amberleigh Retirement Community at Williamsville.

Tickets for the concert are $17 for adults and available at the door. Admission is free to children 14 and under when accompanied by an adult or high school students with valid school identification.

Find out more at our newly redesigned website, http://www.ccwny.org or call 716-218-1400.

2015 Calendars ~ The new Blessed Trinity Calendars were distributed last weekend. There are extra copies in the ushers’ pew in the middle of church. Please feel free to take copies for family members, etc. Thanks again to Bud and Mickey Dick, Vandercher & Dick Funeral Home, for providing these beautiful calendars for our use.

Have a little time and love to spare? Catholic Charities administers the Foster Grandparent Program in Erie County and is calling out to income eligible individuals over 55 to share their experience, skills and talents, and change young lives.
