Multiple symbols of the Trinity are found in our church’s baldachino, the large canopy over the Tabernacle Altar, designed by Robert Hoffman. Among them are the Latin words “Deus Unus et Trinus” (One God in Three Persons) in the pediment, the three hands directly below (the Father “hurling” creation into existence, the Son suffering to redeem mankind, and the Spirit enlightening and sanctifying), and representation of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in the semi-circular area. Feast Day Coincides with Father’s Day ~ This year our parish feast day, Trinity Sunday, coincides with the observance of Father’s Day. We ask for God the Father’s blessing on all our fathers and father-figures, both living and dead, and offer this Father’s Day Prayer:
God, bless all the fathers in the world. Father, we ask that you guide them to be good role models and loving to their children. We also ask that You help them to be a father like You are. Give them grace and patience to handle situations in a loving way. Amen.
The Parish Council will meet on Wednesday, June 19, at 7pm in St. Charles Hall. This is our last regularly scheduled meeting until September, with several items on the agenda to finalize before our summer break. An Unusual Psalm for our Feast Day ~ If you have ever thought psalms are repeated throughout the Liturgical Calendar, you are correct. Many of the psalms proclaimed, especially during Easter, are repeated at various times throughout the year. This week’s psalm, however, appears only once in the three-year liturgical cycle – on Most Holy Trinity Sunday during Cycle C. Its text is beautiful, and provides a wonderful framework for our identity as Blessed Trinity Parish. Next time you open your Bible, I encourage you to look at Psalm 8 – it’s worth repeating! You’re Invited ~ Osaze (Ozy) Ibhawa and Bethany Anderson will be married at Blessed Trinity Church on Saturday, June 22. Many parishioners know Fr. Victor’s younger brother who once resided in the rectory and has served as both an usher and bingo worker. He and Bethany are inviting members of the parish to add to the joy of the occasion and celebrate with their family and friends by attending the 1pm ceremony. Then, on Sunday June 23, the Ibhawa Family invites the parish to join them in St. Charles Hall after Mass for a graduation and wedding thanksgiving luncheon and celebration with live music.
The Mission Cooperative Plan collection will take place on June 29/30 and not on July 6/7 as indicated on the printed envelope. Please give generously.

Bearing Fruit with the Spirit of God ~ Pentecost Sunday is one of my personal favorites because of the sheer magnitude of the drama: Wind! Fire! Fear! Groaning! Gifts of the Spirit! Speaking in tongues! Flowing water! Mystery! Marvels! Your musical selections this weekend included a meditation called Spirit of God by Louis S. Valenzi, a music educator, actor, director and music minister at St. James Parish in Sewickley, Pennsylvania. The text is based on Isaiah 61, and it perfectly coincides with this weekend’s liturgical theme:
Spirit of God, rest upon me, rain down your life-giving love. When I wake or lie down, with peace you surround me; Spirit, come make your home in my heart.

Sister Flavia Dampf’s 75th Jubilee ~ Many Blessed Trinity parishioners remember with affection Sr. Flavia Dampf, who worked in several capacities in our parish for more than 30 years. Since her retirement, she’s been living in the Sisters of St. Joseph residence in Clarence, where she celebrated her seventy-fifth anniversary as a Sister of Social Service at a special afternoon Mass on June 2. Members of the Blessed Trinity Choir participated in the Church Musicians’ Guild of Buffalo’s (“CMG”) season-ending festival Mass on Thursday, May 23, at St. Andrew’s Church in Kenmore. The Mass provides an opportunity for church music directors, musicians, cantors, and choir members to come together in praise and thanksgiving at the end of the Easter season.

Sister Flavia Dampf celebrates 75th Jubilee ~ Many Blessed Trinity parishioners remember with affection Sr. Flavia Dampf, who worked in several capacities in our parish for more than 30 years. Since her retirement, she’s been living in the Sisters of St. Joseph residence in Clarence. On Sunday, June 2, she will celebrate her 75th Anniversary as a Sister of Social Service at a special afternoon Mass at the Clarence residence. We thank Rev. James Hassett for celebrating Mass on Sunday, June 2, while Fr. Victor attends the Ordination Thanksgiving Mass of Rev. Moses O. Ikuelogbonat at St. Martin de Porres Church. Father Moses was ordained on Saturday by the Buffalo Diocese.
Sodality Tour Reminder ~ If you have made a reservation for the June 8 Forest Lawn Cemetery Tour and Sodality luncheon and are interested in carpooling from the church parking lot, you must call Mickey Dick (716-832-2540) or Amy Johnson (716-836-4694) no later than this Wednesday, June 5. The trolley tour, “Famous Women of Forest Lawn,” leaves from the cemetery’s Visitor Center on Main St. (opposite Jefferson Ave) at 10am on Saturday, June 8, and returns at Noon. We will return to St. Charles Hall for lunch.
A Buffalo Connection ~ Today’s Meditation, Peace I Leave With You, was composed by Buffalo native William Wirges. William Wirges was a pianist, bandleader, and composer who was a member of the legendary Cliquot Club Eskimos and a mainstay in the early days of radio. After Wirges served in World War I, he went on the road, working as piano accompanist on the so-called “Chautauqua circuit,” backing up singers and vaudeville acts. Ultimately he would graduate to accompanying famous performers such as Belle Baker and Al Jolson. Wirges was a prolific composer, writing popular songs, sacred material, and commercial jingles. One of the jingles became Wirges’ best-known number, the song “Chiquita Banana” written with lyricists Garth Montgomery and Len Mackenzie. Wirges also composed at least one extended, semi-classical choral work, “Mississippi Lament.”
As we approach Pentecost, let’s keep in mind today’s Entrance Antiphon: O Lord, hear my voice, for I have called to you; of you my heart has spoken: Seek his face; hide not your face from me, alleluia. God has given each of us unique talents to glorify Him – let’s enjoy our journey guided by the Holy Spirit!

Thank you to the docents, greeters, salespeople, and other volunteers who helped with the Sacred Sites Open House on Sunday, May 19. Despite the fencing out front, we welcomed more than 70 people to our unique “medieval” edifice, a record number for a one-day Open House! Everyone seemed to have a good time. There were lots of recollections and positive comments about the church and the people in it. Kudos to our great team: Vera Andrews, Eleanor Ash, Tom Brodfuehrer, Judy Casassa, Mickey Dick, Tom Dinder, Susan Duval, Mary Karlis, Toni Maus, Marianne Pernick, Sr. Liz Savage, and Nancy Yager.

Rummage Sale Fundraiser, Friday, June 7 – Sunday, June 9 at Our Lady of Fatima Shrine (Fatima Hall, 1023 Swann Road, off Route 18, in Lewiston). Friday and Saturday from 9 am-5 pm, and on Sunday from 10 am-5 pm.
Garden Party & Flower Show Fundraiser, Saturday June 15 (3-7:30 pm) at Our Lady of Fatima Shrine (1023 Swann Road, off Rt. 18, in Lewiston). The evening will feature fresh fried dough, appetizers served from 4-5 pm, gourmet buffet served at 6 pm, floral basket raffle and sale, Hat Contest, and a cash wine and beer tent. Birthday Blessing and Coffee Hour ~ The birthday blessing for everyone born during the month of May will take place on Sunday, May 26, at the end of Mass. It will be followed by a coffee hour in St. Charles Hall, hosted by our bingo workers.
Women’s Tour ~ Sodality members have chosen a Forest Lawn Cemetery Tour, followed by a luncheon in St. Charles Hall, as our season ending activity. The trolley tour, “Famous Women of Forest Lawn,” leaves from the cemetery’s Visitor Center on Main St. (opposite Jefferson Ave) at 10am on Saturday, June 8, and returns at Noon. (If there is sufficient interest, we will make arrangements to carpool from the church parking lot). The tour introduces visitors to famous women and historic heroines of WNY and includes stories of suffragettes, writers, social organizers, and even some early entrepreneurs. Tour tickets are $20. All women of the parish are invited to join us; friends are welcome. As of Sunday afternoon, May 26, there was only 1 seat remaining so please don’t procrastinate. Sister Flavia Dampf celebrates 75th Jubilee ~ Many Blessed Trinity parishioners remember with affection Sr. Flavia Dampf, who worked in several capacities in our parish for more than 30 years. Since her retirement, she’s been living in the Sisters of St. Joseph residence in Clarence. Next Sunday, June 2, she will celebrate her 75th Anniversary as a Sister of Social Service at a special afternoon Mass at the Clarence residence. Choir Members Participate in Festival Mass ~ Members of the Blessed Trinity Choir participated in the Church Musicians’ Guild of Buffalo’s (“CMG”) season-ending festival Mass on Thursday, May 23, at St. Andrew’s Church in Kenmore. The Mass provides an opportunity for church music directors, musicians, cantors, and choir members to come together in praise and thanksgiving at the end of the Easter season. CMG awards were presented following the Mass and included the Cecilia Roy Kenny Award to Frank Scinta, the Young Adult Music Ministry Award to Victoria Erdman and the Msgr. Kawalec Organ Scholarship to James Bobak. CMG member Regina Doherty was recognized with a 50-Year Membership Award.
Know Your Faith: Why did Jesus call “love one another” a new commandment? In last Sunday’s Gospel Jesus told us that by our love for one another, we shall be called his disciples. He called it a new commandment because it is the Christian identity. Many people think love is only loving those who love us or who are related to us by blood. Jesus wants us to understand that true love is unconditional, it is selfless, and is shown to anyone without expecting back. It is not limited to relations, ethnicity, tribe, race or language. It cuts across all cultural differences as Jesus showed us when he encountered the Samaritan woman at the well (John 4:4-26). Jesus went beyond the cultural barriers between the Jews and Samaritans at that time. Love is a new commandment because it seeks no revenge, it forgives hurts as Jesus prayed for his killers: “Father forgive them for they do not know what they have done….” (Luke 23:24). Love should forgive hurt done to us, it should be shown to everyone even those who do not deserve it. Love is a new commandment because it should be shown to every human being not only those who show us love or who are related to us. The song They’ll Know We Are Christians, written by Peter Scholtes expresses this new commandment that Jesus calls us to practice:
We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord And we pray that our unity will one day be restored And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by our love Yes they’ll know we are Christians by our love.

May God help us to better understand this new commandment of love and practice it, through Christ our lord, Amen.

Anointing of the Sick and Well-Aging will take place in church this Sunday, May 19, immediately following the 10am Mass.
We are the “medieval” ~ On Sunday, May 19, from 12 noon to 3:00 pm, Blessed Trinity Church will participate in the New York Landmarks Conservancy’s Sacred Sites Open House Weekend.The theme of this ninth annual statewide event is “Medieval to Modern: Celebrating New York’s Religious Art and Architecture.” Special emphasis that afternoon will be on the “medieval” (12th Century Romanesque) features of our church and the Italian churches on which our house of worship is modeled. Free docent-led tours will be available. Click HERE to read more about this opportunity to learn about the history, art and architecture of our Landmark house of worship.
Your patience and courtesy are requested ~ The planning phase took much longer than expected, but restoration work — partially funded by a grant from New York State — has begun on the front steps and plaza area of our church, as well as the roof. Please remember that we need to keep two driving lanes in the church’s east (ramp) side driveway. Our church is fortunate to have ample off-street parking places for everyone attending religious services. In the interest of safety, please use only marked parking places and do not create a parking lane parallel to the church building or park on the sidewalk near the garden and wheelchair ramp. Thank you.
A Heart Full of Music ~ This past week has reminded me how music can be a powerful mechanism for healing and how humans seek music to cope with life’s trials. There is inherent music in the human body created by our God, be it the lilt of a voice, the creak of an aching joint, or the rhythm of a beating heart. There is the song we hum aloud or just hear in our head in moments of sheer joy or extreme trial. Liturgical musical selections are made after reviewing the weekend readings and the overall theme for the week or the season. Music can reinforce important texts by setting them to a beautiful melody, provide comfort with a gentle accompaniment, or even exclaim resounding joy with a cacophony of trumpets. All are appropriate, especially during the Easter season. Our hope is that you carry beautiful music in your heart throughout the week that keeps you engaged in the Liturgy. Whether it’s the joy of “Lift High the Cross,” the comfort of “In My Father’s House,” or the peace of “Shall We Gather at the River,” may the music at Blessed Trinity help you navigate whatever you encounter until we meet again. Prayerful Thanks for Our Parish Chefs ~ We extend thanks and compliments to the men who continued the Parish Holy Name Society’s tradition of serving a wonderful Mother’s Day Brunch following last Sunday’s 10am Mass. The women of the parish were treated to a buffet featuring egg dishes, fresh fruit and pastries and received souvenir roses. Mother’s Day Breakfast ~ Our Holy Name Society will once again host women of the parish at Sunday’s Mother Day Breakfast following the 10 AM Mass. Daughters, mothers, sisters, similar in-laws are welcome. A $5 donation for each non-parishioner guest will be collected at the door.
The Parish Council will meet on Wednesday, May 15, at 7 pm in St. Charles Hall. There are only two meetings remaining before the summer break. If you are unable to attend, please contact Mickey Dick (716-832-2540) as soon as possible.
A “match” for your Catholic Charities donation ~ Friday, May 17, is Hope Day. All donations made to the Catholic Charities 2019 Appeal on that day will be matched dollar for dollar. Why not make a gift for Mom. She has made a tremendous impact on you. Now you can make a tremendous impact in the lives of others in her honor. Or give a gift for your friend or neighbor. Your patience and courtesy are requested ~ The planning phase took much longer than expected, but restoration work — partially funded by a grant from New York State — has begun on the front steps and plaza area of our church, as well as the tile roof. We are fortunate to have ample off-street parking places for everyone attending religious services, and in the interest of safety for everyone using the driveway on the east side of church, we are asking that you PLEASE DO NOT PARK on the sidewalk near the garden and wheelchair ramp. Be courteous and leave the designated “handicapped” spaces for those who really need them. This accommodation is especially important now that construction equipment is present, but should continue long after the work is completed.
We are the “medieval” ~ On Sunday, May 19, from 12 noon to 3:00 pm, Blessed Trinity Church will participate in the New York Landmarks Conservancy’s Sacred Sites Open House Weekend.The theme of this ninth annual statewide event is “Medieval to Modern: Celebrating New York’s Religious Art and Architecture.” Special emphasis that afternoon will be on the “medieval” (12th Century Romanesque) features of our church and the Italian churches on which our house of worship is modeled. A Good Shepherd for the Ewes ~ We identify today as Good Shepherd Sunday, from the Gospel reading. Also, today is celebrated as Mother’s Day in the United States. Our musical selections encompassed what a good shepherd does to take care of the sheep while we also honored Mary, the mother of our Lord and Savior, the example to all Christian mothers. While it may seem to be quite a leap to link these two celebrations, our meditation hymn exemplifies it perfectly, I believe.
Like a child rests in its mother’s arms, so will I rest in You. My God, I am not proud. I do not look for things too great. My God, I trust in you. You care for me, You give me peace. O Israel, trust in God, now and always trust in God. Like a child rests in its mother’s arms, so will I rest in You.

A Warning from Father Victor ~ In recent weeks, at least two parishioners have received text messages from someone claiming to be “Reverend Victor.” The message is a scam that requests purchase of a gift card (Google Play Card) for a cancer patient he is going to see. These messages are not coming from Father Victor and he asks that you please ignore them. Other similar scams claim to be sent from the IRS or law enforcement agencies. Protect yourself and your money by NEVER responding to this type of request to purchase gift cards.

Women of the parish shared photos and insightful stories of their remarkable mothers, grandmothers and godmothers at the Sodality May 5 meeting. A program-ending game found them matching each other’s youthful photos with those of their moms.
St. Louis Choir Concert on Thursday, May 16 at 7:30pm at St. Louis Church (35 Edward Street at Main in Buffalo). The program is free and open to the public. Featured will be works of Bach, Mozart, Farrant, Ouseley, Friedel, Poston, and others. Inspired by Our Mothers ~ The Ladies Sodality’s meeting is Sunday, May 5, following the 10am Mass. It includes a program in celebration of our mothers, both living and deceased. We invite all women of the parish to join in sharing the remarkable histories of mothers, grandmothers, or other women who have inspired your lives. We would love it if you would also bring a youthful photo of her and your own childhood photo.

The Best of Agape ~ In addition to enjoying all the culinary treats on our Agape table, Sunday’s guests had the fun of voting for their favorites. After the ballots were all counted, Dan and Jacquie Korchowsky’s chicken & smoked sausage gumbo edged out Joe Nwoga’s Jeloff rice for main course honors. Vera Andrew’s taco salad was the favorite among the appetizers, and Amy Johnson’s fruit bowl was the salad of choice. The “hands-up” favorite dessert was Don Williams’ chocolate cheesecake, and another dessert – Mickey Dick’s lamb cake – was the top vote-getter in the “other” category. Thank you to everyone who contributed and attended.

Plenty of Fish ~ This weekend’s readings were filled with all kinds of imagery, all of which lead easily to great musical selections – Joy! Lambs! Fishing! Water! Food! The Communion Hymn, Song of the Body of Christ, by David Haas has always intrigued me because it is based on a traditional Hawaiian melody. The “composer” listed in our Breaking Bread hymnal is No Ke Ano’ Ahi Ahi, which is actually the name of the traditional Hawaiian chant. It is believed to be either a celebration of Lunalilo’s voyage to America or a description of a romance between the prince and a woman named Pua Rose. In 1989, David Haas adapted the melody and created the text we sing during Mass. Somehow it always makes me think of water and beaches – and the text certainly combines many of this week’s liturgical themes.
We come to share our story, we come to break the bread, we come to know our rising from the dead.
We come as your people, we come as your own, united with each other, love finds a home.
We are called to heal the broken, to be hope for the poor; we are called to feed the hungry at our door.
Bread of life and cup of promise, in this meal we all are one. In our dying and our rising, may your kingdom come.
You will lead and we shall follow, you will be the breath of life; living water, we are thirsting for your light.
We will live and sing your praises, “Alleluia” is our song. May we live in love and peace our whole life long.

A Warning from Father Victor ~ In recent weeks, at least two parishioners have received text messages from someone claiming to be “Reverend Victor.” The message is a scam that requests purchase of a gift card (Google Play Card) for a cancer patient he is going to see. These messages are not coming from Father Victor and he asks that you please ignore them. Other similar scams claim to be sent from the IRS or law enforcement agencies. Protect yourself and your money by NEVER responding to this type of request to purchase gift cards.

Blessed Trinity featured on Channel 2 ~ WGRZ-TV’s Kevin O’Neill and Channel 2 photographer, Charles, visited Blessed Trinity very early Thursday morning April 25, for a live “Daybreak” feature. They also did a much lengthier Facebook Live session with members of our docent team. [Click HERE to view their video]. We invite you to gain a greater understanding of the inspiration and meaning behind our church’s art and architecture on Sunday, May 19, from 12 Noon-3pm, when we will be participating in the NY Landmarks Conservancy’s state-wide Sacred Sites Open House Weekend. In fact, we are — without a doubt — the “medieval” in their 2019 theme, “Medieval to Modern: Celebrating New York Religious Art and Architecture.” Parishioners will be on hand to greet you, and members of our docent team will share even more information than we were able to give our friends from Channel 2. You don’t have to travel to Europe to see amazing church architecture, and you can start your tour right in your home parish. Tours are free and open to the public, so please invite your friends and neighbors.
The Lord is Risen – Alleluia! While the Easter Triduum officially ended last Sunday evening at Vespers, Eastertide continues until Pentecost in June. Luckily, we have a rich musical heritage in the Catholic Church that continues to grow. Let’s explore as many jubilant hymns as possible during this celebration, remembering old favorites and finding new ones.
We sang a brand new hymn this week, God of Might and God of Mercy, composed in 2015 by a Blessed Trinity favorite, Fr. Michael Joncas. He writes the following reflection on this piece:“God of Might and God of Mercy” began as a commission from my friend, Fr. Bill Graham, as a present to his parish, St. Michael’s, in Duluth, MN. The original version offers the assembly a way of reflecting on how they encounter God in the various elements of Eucharistic worship: in the gathering of the baptized, in the Liturgy of the Word, in the Liturgy of the Lord’s Table, in the world outside of the Eucharistic liturgy and in their commission to evangelize and serve that world.
About the same time as the hymn was created, Pope Francis issued his encyclical Laudato si’ on the care of the earth and its people. Many of us church composers were powerfully affected by that encyclical and sought to make its ideas available for worshiping assemblies in their sung prayer. Bob Hurd invited us to contribute to a project he envisioned incorporating compositions from a variety of composers in a variety of styles, all of which would further awareness and the message of Laudato si’. I felt that God of Might and God of Mercy would fit into such a project, especially with the fourth stanza’s concern for “the cry of the poor and the cry of the earth,” as Pope Francis taught. At Bob’s invitation I wrote an alternative fourth stanza that makes the themes of Laudato si even clearer.”
This hymn seemed to be a perfect opening hymn for Divine Mercy Sunday, especially since we just celebrated Earth Day this past week. Since the text is so beautiful, I decided to envelope the Liturgy and utilize the same hymn for the closing so we get to sing all six verses. Hope this new process wasn’t too confusing — and that this new hymn filled your heart with Easter peace.

Our Third Annual Parish Agape Feast takes place Sunday, April 28, beginning at 4pm in St. Charles Hall. In the Agape tradition, we are asking everyone who is able to share a favorite food (appetizer, salad, meat, vegetable, casserole, pizza, dessert … you name it) for our family table. Please bring your dish plated and ready to serve. (Although we have the ability to keep hot dishes warm temporarily, we cannot cook your meal). Beverages will be provided, and ballots will be available to choose your favorites in several categories. We trust that this year’s feast will be our best yet, and that you will be there to enjoy this expression of community, sharing, and fellowship for all ages. Feel free to bring a friend.
A Blessed Trinity Treasure ~ Did you know there has been a choir at Blessed Trinity for over 75 years? Fundraiser for St. Mary’s School for the Deaf ~ Saturday, May 4, from 10am to 4pm. Craft and Vendor Show, Food Trucks, and ZUMBATHON (11am-1pm)…Fundraiser for St. Mary’s School for the Deaf S.T.E.A.M (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts , Math) Program participants to help with costs for upcoming trip to Boston. The trip is designed to offer the students opportunities to apply what they are learning in the real world. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at door.
