Prayer Partners ~ This week we pray that we may “Live with New Eyes.” Easter means to live with a sense of newness. Just as the return of spring lifts our spirits and makes us feel like the whole world is new, the Resurrection of Jesus makes “all things new”(Rev. 21:5). The Easter spirit is a spirit of renewal that enables us to show up at work with a positive attitude, to renew relationships that have been taken for granted, and to express appreciation and affection to those closest to us. It means to see the world through new eyes — God’s eyes. Let us pray for this gift for each other. And remember to save the date: Tuesday, June 4, 5:30 p.m. at St. Columba-Brigid. Come and meet your partner at a pot-luck social and enjoy quality time with all the CCCB churches. Please sign up as soon as possible, using the form on the altar railing near Our Lady’s Shrine.

Collection for the Church in Latin America ~ On the weekend of May 18-19, there will be a special collection for the Church in Latin America. Latin American Catholics are often characterized by their warm, humble, and passionate hearts. They have been blessed by a rich culture as well as natural resources. However, in these times of economic struggle, poverty and violence are still major obstacles in their daily lives. Your support helps give hope to people in the region, especially the youth who seek to live faith. It is more important than ever that we support the Church in Latin America and the Caribbean. Please give generously.
Summer Programs for Children ~ Information we receive on these programs will be displayed on the table in the front vestibule of church.

Prayer Partners ~ This week we pray for the grace to live without fear — for our partner and for our world. The Resurrection teaches us that God can overcome anything, even death. When the Risen Christ appears to the women at the tomb and later to his disciples, his first words are “Do not be afraid!” (Mt 28:5,10). These words speak to our hearts, helping us cope with the fear from the loss of a job, a serious illness, or a crumbling relationship. Our faith allows us to trust that God can overcome our most serious problems.

UB Pride & Service Day ~ If you noticed that our parish grounds have undergone a “spring cleaning,” it is because of a group of volunteers from the State University at Buffalo who spent Tuesday morning in the neighborhood. Greg Bellanton, Adriana Black, Sadé Cadle, Akeelya DePass, Robin Murray, Noelle Nesbitt, Emmanuel Jericho Nortey, Christine Puna, together with team leader, Natalie Surin, worked in our Leroy and Dewey Avenue gardens. Harish Ganesan, Varshiaee Krishnamurthy, Aiyan Lu, Ashanti McGill, Phurba Sherpa, Dolkar Sherpo, Aditya Thakur, Bhavya Vagdargi, and Shuyue Zhang, as well as their team leader, Bennie Williams, did double duty. They assisted the staff at the FLARE Community Center, and then pitched in with the outdoor work. The work party ended with a docent-guided tour of the church. We also wish to thank Richard Plunkett and Bud Dick who were instrumental in arranging our participation, as well as Judy Casassa, Luis Clay, Mickey Dick and Jerry Gallisdorfer who worked along with and directed the volunteers.Click HERE to see photos on our Facebook page.

Prayer Partners ~ This week pray that your prayer partner may experience the Risen Lord’s peace and joy. Joy is a deep-down gladness that cannot be taken away, even in the midst of sorrow. The Passion and Resurrection of Jesus teach us that suffering is transformed through faith in the Risen Christ. With this faith, we are able to hold on to an enduring sense of joy even in the midst of the sadness we experience from the loss of a loved one, a failure to achieve an important goal, or a setback during recovery from an illness. May our whole church experience this joy!

The Villa Maria Choral in Concert

The Trinity Concert Series, “beautiful music in a beautiful space …,” presents a performance of Karl Jenkins The Peacemakers. Captivating melodies honoring inspirational figures (including Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela Martin Luther King, Jr., Mother Teresa) whose voices changed the world. A free will offering will be taken.

Welshman Karl Jenkins is one of the most prolific, popular and performed composers in the world today.  He has been credited with transcending all boundaries – musical, geographic and cultural – in his style and integrity.

His 2011 composition, “The Peacemakers,” continues a theme of music in the celebration of peace by paying tribute to inspirational figures who have shaped history with their wisdom or resolved social or political issues in a peaceful way.  These messengers  include such iconic figures as St. Francis of Assisi, Anne Frank, Mahatma Ghandi, Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King, Mother Theresa, and the Dalai Lama.

Drawing from two of the world’s great faiths, Christianity and Judaism, Jenkins cites passages from the Bible.  He uses quotes from the Qur’an and the Baha’i faith.  In the song “Fanfara” the word “peace” is sung in 21 languages.  All this is set on a musical background that hints at their origins and culture: African rhythm and harmony in “Let there be justice for all”; the Indian flute imitated in “I offer you peace”; echoes of the blues of the American South in “He had a dream”; monastic chant in “Let there be justice for all”; and echoes of Celtic drums and pipes in “Healing Light.”

The diversity of his melodies in “The Peacemakers” is a compelling and moving testament to the ethos of the work, summarized in the words of the 13th century Persian mystic poet, Rumi:  “All religions, all singing one song:  Peace be with you.”

The Villa Maria Choral , the “Choir in Residence” at Villa Maria College, has made an impact on the Western New York community since the choir’s debut in 1984. Founded by the Felician Sisters who were renowned for their musical leadership at Villa Maria College, the choir has developed from a small group of students to its current community-based membership. Their unique style and blend of voices has been the result of the masterful instruction and direction of award-winning director, Ireneusz Lukaszewski. Having won numerous awards with his choirs in Europe, Professor Lukaszewski has brought his knowledge and experience to the American musical milieu with his work with the Villa Maria Chorale. Together they have developed a rich repertoire of choral music from Palestrina and Vivaldi to contemporary works of Rutter, Lloyd Webber and Karl Jenkins, and have chosen Welsh composer Jenkins’ The Peacemakers as their major work this year. The choir has traveled well beyond the Buffalo area, performing in several famous European shrines and participating in choral festivals in Europe and Canada. It also instituted an artistic and cultural exchange program that brought many choirs, conductors and individual performers from Europe to our community.
