Support for Vive ~ A special collection will be taken at parishes throughout the diocese on the weekend of August 23/24 for the refugees at Vive. As the Catholic Church in the U.S. is looking for ways to respond to the plight of migrants and refugees in our country, our own community response,Vive, is being forced to cease operation. Founded 30 years ago by the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, Vive has assisted 90,000 refugees to either obtain legal status in Canada or move ahead on the path to U.S. citizenship. In a August 5th letter to all parishes in the diocese, Bishop Richard Malone explained that “[i]n recent years all government housing money has been taken away and the congregations of Sisters find themselves unable to bear the burden of support.” As a result, Vive will close its doors on September 30, 2014. The agency, located on nearby Wyoming Avenue, “has an urgent financial need to provide for its current 60 refugees as they are placed elsewhere and to close down the building.”  The refugee crisis is not a world away. It is right here in our neighborhood. Thank you for your prayers and generous contributions to this special collection.

20th Sunday in Ordinary Time – Week of August 17, 2014

A verse from today's Gospel (Mt. 15:26) is repeated in the ceramic medallions on the church altar rail, pictured here in a photo of the Buffalo Flute Club in recital at Blessed Trinity. The Latin words "Vere Panis Filiorum Non Mittendus Canibus" are taken from Christ's exchange with a Canaanite woman who seeks healing for her daughter. When the church was built, the Eucharist was offered to the people kneeling at the rail. While Christ used these words to test the woman's faith, "they are applied here in the sense of never to deprive anyone...of the blessings of the Eucharist...." Rev. Walter Kern's "Guidebook to Blessed Trinity R.C. Church," pp. 31-32.

Catholic Charities ~ In the Central African Republic and South Sudan, people live through farming. Most of their food comes from what they can grow, and the crops which are not eaten are sold to bring income. But the recent violence in these African nations has prevented farmers from planting this year. In the face of a possible famine, Catholic Relief Services is working to prepare families for the difficult times ahead.

Annual Alumni Mass, September 28, 2014 at 10 a.m.

patrol.boys

Our Annual Alumni Mass will be held at Blessed Trinity Church on Sunday, September 28, 2014, at 10 A.M.  We look forward to welcoming all alumni, especially the graduates of 1944, 1954, 1964 and 1974 who will celebrate significant anniversaries. We encourage those graduates to contact their classmates and take advantage of the occasion to arrange individual class reunions.

A reception in St. Charles Hall following the Mass provides an ideal opportunity to reminisce and renew acquaintances. Please consider bringing a food item to share.

Margaret Foisset Schirmann, Class of 1925

Margaret Foisset Schirmann, Class of 1925

As part of our annual Mass, we pause to remember all deceased alumni and faculty, and the names of graduates who have passed away since last year’s Mass will be read. We will be remembering Edward Oscar Steinwachs, ’29; Sister Mary Helen (Teresea) Hope, ’36; Bernice Schwanekamp Graff, ’39; William J. Dengler, ’40; Joan M. Downs West, ’46; Frederick K. “Fritz” Ehlers, ’49; James J. Speyer, ’52; Michael H. Stone, ’53; David P. Zimolong, ’55; Donald Sheridan, ’56; Donald C. Nicklas, ’57; Karen E. Sweeney, ’64; Stephen D. Martin, ’66; and 1925 graduate and beloved former teacher,  Margaret M. Foisset Schirmann, who passed on December 18, 2013, just two weeks before her 103rd birthday. May they rest in peace. Please inform the committee if you are aware of other recent alumni deaths by leaving a message HERE, and their names will be added to the prayer intentions on that day.

In conjunction with the September 28, 2014 alumni gathering, we are sponsoring our Fifth BT Alumni Raffle for the purpose of raising funds to help pay for restoration and repairs on our beautiful Church. Since we began our raffles in 2009 we have raised over $9,400, half of which was donated to the Church, with the remaining monies (after Alumni Committee expenses) divided among the winners (2 each year). We want to continue this tradition and, with your help, we hope to have an equally successful fundraiser. The drawing will take place at the reception following the Alumni Mass. You don’t need to be present to winbut you DO need to return your completed ticket stubs and check payable to “Blessed Trinity Alumni” no later than September 22, 2014. Raffle tickets — priced at $5.00 each or six (6) for $25.00 — will be in the mail by August 22, so watch for yours. Winners will be notified by mail and included in a post on this web site and on the Blessed Trinity School Alumni Facebook page. You may also purchase tickets at the reception prior to the drawing. To request raffle tickets, check your status on our mailing list, or change your contact information, click HERE and leave a detailed message.

One hundred thirty alumni and guests enjoyed our October 13, 2012 all-class reunion dinner, with seventy attending Sunday’s Mass and reception. (Click HERE to view photos). The Alumni Committee continues to provide a time and place for you to reunite with former classmates and neighbors each year. As in the past, we encourage each of you, particularly members of the anniversary classes, to personally contact members of your graduating classes regarding alumni activities. We are willing to provide whatever contact information we have for your classmates, but our committee is just too small to do the organizing for you.

To update or add your contact information, click HERE and send us the following information: your name (including maiden name), year of graduation, mailing and email addresses, and a preferred phone number. We promise not to share your information except for purposes of class reunions.

We hope you will plan to join us on Sunday, September 28, 2014.  If you have any questions or comments, Click HERE and leave a message for the Alumni Committee. For information about upcoming events at Blessed Trinity Church, including the 2014-15 Trinity Concert Series and opportunities to tour the church, Click HERE.

17th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Week of July 27, 2014

"Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty, my memory, my understanding, and my entire will, all I have and call my own. You have given all to me. To you, Lord, I return it. Everything is yours; do with it what you will. Give me only your love and your grace, that is enough for me." The "Suscipe" prayer is attributed to St. Ignatius of Loyola, whose feast the Church celebrates on July 31. He is depicted (4th standing figure from the left) in this grouping of "Monks, Hermits and Religious" in the Dome of our church. Also shown, St. Alphonsus Liguori (far left with book and pen), whose feast day is August 1. The Dome painting is by Joseph Mazur; the photo by Gary Kelley.

16th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Week of July 20, 2014

Mary of MagdalaJuly 22Mary of Magdala, in spite of the undeservedly tarnished reputation she held for fifteen centuries, is arguably the second most important woman in the New Testament. She is mentioned a total of fourteen times in all four accounts of the Gospel – more than most of the apostles -- and modern scripture scholarship has now redeemed her reputation, embracing the earlier view of Saint Augustine who was the first to call her “the Apostle to the Apostles.” Mary is depicted in both painting and woodcarving in our church. Here, in a grouping of “Virgins and Widows” in the great dome, she appears as the first kneeling figure on the left. Photo credit: Gary Kelley.
