Weekly Highlight from Faithful Citizenship: A message from Sister Maureen Harris ~ Actually I feel #14 of Part 1 from the Forming Consciences document is so important to reflect on as Christians that I am going to quote all of it. (To read the entire document, visit www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/faithfulcitizenship/upload).

  • #14 “Unfortunately, politics in our country often can be a contest of powerful interests, partisan attacks, …, and media hype. The Church calls for a different kind of political engagement: one shaped by the moral convictions of well formed consciences and focused on the dignity of every human being, the pursuit of the common good, and the protection of the weak and the vulnerable. As Pope Francis reminds us, ‘Politics, though often denigrated, remains a lofty vocation and one of the highest forms of charity, inasmuch as it seeks the common good … I beg the Lord to grant us more politicians who are genuinely disturbed by the state of society, the people, the lives of the poor!’ (EG, #205) The Catholic call to the faithful citizenship which affirms the importance of political participation, should help transform the party to which we belong; we should not let the party transform us in such a way that we neglect or deny fundamental moral truths or approve intrinsically evil acts. We are called to bring together our principles and our political choices, our values and our votes, to help build a civilization of truth and love.” Do I take my voting responsibility this seriously?

Our long-time custodian and maintenance person, Jerry Gallisdorfer, will be retiring at the end of September. We owe him our deep thanks for his competence and dedication to Blessed Trinity and wish him a full and happy retirement……..

St. Benedict ~ “Once again our nation is mourning the loss of innocent life. As news from Dallas continues to unfold, we receive it with broken hearts, dismay, and concern for the direction in which our nation is heading. St. Benedict (whose feast we celebrate on Monday, July 11) understood political unrest, cultural decay, violence, fear, and confusion. He was born during the fall of the Western Roman Empire and his Rule can serve as an important guide to us as we navigate the unfamiliar waters of violence, anger, and fear within our contemporary nation and world. Author, speaker, and Benedictine Oblate Pamela Patnode will be discussing important truths found within the Rule of St. Benedict that can help us during these uncertain times. Tune into Relevant Radio on Monday, July 11 (7:00am ET)….” www.relevantradio.com. From Philomena Press, LLC

Faithful Citizenship: A message from Sister Maureen Harris ~ “Concerned about the upcoming election? I am. I hope to have a few remarks each week taken from the document A Call to Political Responsibility from the Catholic Bishops of the United States – ‘Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship.’ (It is online if you want to read it yourself at www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/faithfulcitizenship/upload.) There are three parts to the document. I will begin with highlights from Part 1 – the text stresses that ‘the work for justice requires that the mind and heart of Catholics be educated and formed to know and practice the whole faith.’ Among those teachings are the four basic principles of Catholic social doctrine: the dignity of the human person, the common good, subsidiarity, and solidarity.

  • #7 – No one can tell us for whom or against whom to vote. The Bishops’ purpose is to help Catholics form their consciences in accordance with God’s truth.
  • #8 – We encourage Catholics to seek those resources authorized by their bishops, their state Catholic conferences, and the USCCB.
  • #9 – The Church’s obligation to participate in shaping the moral character of society is a requirement of our faith.
  • #10 – At the center of these truths is respect for the dignity of every person. This is the core of Catholic moral and social teaching. We are called to practice Christ’s commandment to “love one another” (Jn. 13:34).

I hope you will find this helpful and encourage you to get out and vote.”

Keeping the children’s best interests a top priority is not always easy in the turmoil of divorce and separation. Parents can learn how to develop a “professional” relationship with their co-parent for the benefit of the children – and oneself. Anthony Boothali from the Society for Faith and Children’s Education (S FACE). Father Anthony will share the vision of the Society to “hear the voice of the poor” through their mission activity as they seek to be the hands and feet of Christ in India. The primary goal of S FACE is to provide post-secondary education to young adults in developing countries. Over the last eight years S FACE has sponsored or is currently sponsoring over 300 students with a 3 year scholarship. They have also begun a new endeavor, building the S FACE Mission Center where further faith formation and retreats will continue to nourish the spiritual life of the young people.  Please be as generous as possible during our Annual Mission Appeal Weekend.

Married couples help by giving a 20-minute talk once or twice a year on essential topics and issues that engaged and newly married couples face. News from our Parish Community

Bill and Gwen Warren

Bill and Gwen Warren

msd.20160612.05.WarrensThank You, Bill and Gwen! ~ On Sunday, June 12, the parish honored  Warren at a special reception following the 10 AM Mass. Bill, a recent retiree and former owner of Hertel Parker Liquor, first became associated with our parish in the Fall of 1998 when he hosted our first wine tasting. He and Gwen subsequently became both parishioners and benefactors. Over the next sixteen years, their generosity allowed us to raise thousands of dollars for our parish and two community organizations we supported, the Interfaith Hospitality Network (now Family Promise) and The Bridge. Special thanks to Bob Heicklen and Jessie Wells for hosting such a wonderful luncheon for all of us.

The Parish Council will meet on Wednesday, June 15, at 7 PM in St. Charles Hall. This is the last regularly scheduled meeting until September. Please make every effort to attend so that we can finalize plans for summer events and coordinate committee follow-up.

Congratulations are in order for Esquisite Dunnigan, a member of Tapestry Charter School’s track and field team. Esquisite and her teammates placed first in the 4×100 relay in the Division II competition at the New York State Public High Schools Athletic Association championship meet held at Cicero-North Syracuse High School on June 10. They ran the relay in 49.3 to claim Tapestry’s second straight title in that event.

Compassion Ministry training ~ If you are interested in visiting those in the hospital, nursing homes or the homebound, either in person or by phone, training for this “compassion ministry” will be offered again this summer beginning on July 25 at 6:30 PM and continuing for five additional Mondays. To find out more or to sign-up, please call Sr. Maureen Harris (716-882-3129), Joyce Menefee (716-832-7728), or Pat Dyer (716-308-6302).

Catholic Communication Campaign ~ Your contributions to the CCC collection continue the work of communicating the Gospel around the world. In addition, 50% of CCC funds collected in our diocese remain in the diocese to support local communication efforts. Thank You for your generosity.

Care for Creation ~ June 18 is the one year anniversary of Pope Francis’ encyclical, Laudato Si, Care for Our Common Home. “The urgent challenge to protect our common home includes a concern to bring the whole human family together to seek a sustainable and integral development, for we know that things can change. The Creator does not abandon us; he never forsakes his loving plan or repents of having created us. Humanity still has the ability to work together in building our common home. I urgently appeal, then, for a new dialogue about how we are shaping the future of our planet. We need a conversation which includes everyone, since the environmental challenge we are undergoing, and its human roots, concern and affect us all.” (13 and 14) www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/human-life-and-dignity/environment/index.cfm.

Our Sacred Sites Open House ~ A thousand THANKS to all the wonderful volunteers who helped with BT’s Sacred Sites Open House on the weekend of May 21-22. We hosted more than sixty people, and every single visitor was positively impressed by the church – and by the kindness, knowledge, helpfulness and enthusiasm of all the volunteers. We heard nothing but good things from everyone who came! And we also learned some new facts and heard some interesting stories from folks who’ve been part of the parish’s history over the years. Everybody had a good time – with a big THANK YOU to all of you. To view photos from the Sacred Sites Open House, click HERE.

Please welcome Barbara Sercu, who began working as our part-time parish secretary/receptionist on April 26. A Kenmore resident, Barb is a high-energy retiree who had two previous medically-related careers at ECMC and Kenmore Mercy. She’s had fun mastering the idiosyncrasies of our scanner-copier as she prepares the bulletin, and is now working on several areas of record keeping that need serious attention. With Barbara’s arrival, we have instituted new rectory office hours: Tuesday-Thursday from 10:30 AM – 2:30 PM. If you are in the neighborhood, please stop by to introduce yourself and welcome the newest member of our parish family.

Our 2016 Sacred Sites Open House Weekend was a great success. Our new video – an aerial view of the church and immediate neighborhood filmed by Buffalo Above using a drone – was a big hit.
