Visitors from Our Mother of Good Counsel, July 19, 2016

Parishioners of Our Mother of Good Counsel Church in Blasdell, New York had a chance to learn more about out our handmade bricks, medieval iconography displayed in the church’s terra cotta facade, and some of the 2,000 symbols summarizing Christian beliefs when they visited Blessed Trinity in July. Our docent team of Judy Casassa and Mickey Dick enjoyed welcoming our visitors and answering their insightful questions.

We had the greatest grill men for “Summer in the City” on Aug. 2nd!

News from our Parish Community

Who Doesn’t Like a Picnic! ~ On Tuesday, August 2nd, we proved that we all do. But even something as “relaxed” as a picnic requires a lot of planning and hard work, and Blessed Trinity was up to the task. And so we send heartfelt thanks to everyone who played a part in making National Night Out and the CCCB’s “Summer in the City” such an enjoyable evening. We won’t name names, but you know who you are: the folks who arranged for donations; gathered the grill and tents and shopped for essentials; made sure there was ample ice to keep all the drinks cold; hauled tables and chairs; set up games and erected canopies; prepared side dishes and desserts; provided entertainment for the children; endured the fire and smoke to grill our hot dogs and hamburgers; made numerous trips up and down stairs with food and utensils – and then did it all in reverse at the end of the night as we put everything back in its place. Whew! In between, we hope you all enjoyed meeting and dining with neighbors and dancing to the music of J.J. Williams. Thanks again to a wonderful team of BT volunteers. Click HERE for a photo gallery from our National Night Out celebration.

Full-time Position Available ~ We are still hoping to bring on a new custodian before Jerry Gallisdorder leaves in September so that he can show the new person around and train him/her in the basic tasks of the job. If you know of someone qualified for the job, please have him/her submit a resume to the rectory as soon as possible.
The Custodian is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of several buildings and assisting with a variety of semi-skilled manual work in the maintenance, repair and energy management of the church and other parish buildings. Requires a high school education, completed police background check, basic knowledge of plumbing and electrical work, and ability to maintain the buildings and grounds of the parish. This is a full-time position, with salary commensurate with education and experience.
For detailed questions about the job, contact Bud Dick (832-2540). More information about the position is available at http://www.buffalodiocese.org/job-opportunities. Look under under “Parishes/Other.”

Weekly Highlight from Faithful Citizenship: A message from Sister Maureen Harris ~ How does the Church Help the Catholic Faithful to speak about Political and Social Questions? Part 1 of this document is so important in regard to forming moral consciences that I feel I am not doing justice to it and encourage you to read the document for yourself. (To read the entire document, visit www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/faithfulcitizenship/upload). Again, here are just a few highlights from Part 1 of A Well-Formed Conscience:

  • #22  from Doing Good and Avoiding Evil There are some things we must never do, as individuals or as a society, because they are always incompatible with love of God and neighbor. Such actions are so deeply flawed that they are always opposed to the authentic good of persons. They must always be rejected and opposed and must never be supported or condoned. A prime example is the intentional taking of innocent human life, as in abortion and euthanasia.
  • #23 Other direct assaults on innocent human life, such as genocide, torture, and the targeting of noncombatants in acts of terror or war, can never be justified. Nor can violations of human dignity, such as acts of racism, treating workers as mere means to an end, deliberately subjecting workers to subhuman living conditions, treating the poor as disposable or redefining marriage to deny its essential meaning, ever be justified.

Knowledge is power, and now is the time to work on a brighter future. Catholic Charities Education and workforce programs offer High School Equivalency test preparation and job readiness services to Erie County adults ages 16 and older. At Catholic Charities, after receiving an educational/career assessment, students attend small classes and a counselor works with each student on job readiness skills, leadership training and potential college placement. For more information, call 893-3500 or visit our website www.ccwny.org.

Rectory office hours are Tuesday-Thursday from 10:30 AM – 2:30 PM. Please call our secretary, Barbara Sercu, at 716-833-0301 if you have information for the bulletin, changes to your phone number or mailing address, or would like to register as a parishioner.

Our Helping Hands Food Pantry has extended its hours and now operates on both Friday and Saturday mornings from 9 AM – 12 Noon. If you are interested in volunteering, contact Luis Clay at 716-812-3461.

18th Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ Week of July 31, 2016

St. Alphonsus Liguori (1695-1787) and St. Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556), whose feast days we celebrate this week, are both depicted in a in a group of twelve figures identified as “Monks, Hermits, and Religious” in the dome of our church. St. Alphonsus, the first standing figure on the left, is pictured with a pen and book. Although he acquired fame as a writer, the founder of the Redemptorist Congregation is also remembered for his preaching and pastoral reforms. His feast is celebrated on August 1. St. Ignatius, fourth from the left (standing), was on his way to military fame before a debilitating war injury. His conversion experience began during his convalescence, and his writings during that time culminated in his greatest work, the Spiritual Exercises. Founder of the Jesuits, his feast day is July 31. Weekly Highlight from Faithful Citizenship: A message from Sister Maureen Harris ~ How does the Church Help the Catholic Faithful to speak about Political and Social Questions? Again, just a few highlights from Part 1 of A Well-Formed Conscience concerning this issue: (To read the entire document, visit www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/faithfulcitizenship/upload).

  • #17 “Catholics have a serious and lifelong obligation to form their consciences in accord with human reason and the teaching of the Church. Conscience is not something that allows us to justify doing whatever we want, nor is it a mere “feeling” about what we should or should not do.  Rather, conscience is the voice of God resounding in the human heart, revealing the truth to us and calling us to do what is good while shunning what is evil.”
  • #19 The Virtue of Prudence – The Church fosters well-formed consciences not only by teaching moral truth but also by encouraging its members to develop the virtue of prudence.  (Prudence enables us “to discern our true good in every circumstance and to choose the right means of achieving it” – Catechism of the Catholic Church).
  • #20 We have a responsibility to discern carefully which public policies are morally sound.  Catholics may choose different ways to respond to compelling social problems, but we cannot differ on our moral obligation to help build a more just and peaceful world through morally acceptable means, so that the weak and vulnerable are protected and human rights and dignity are defended.

Weekly Highlight from Faithful Citizenship: A message from Sister Maureen Harris ~ Actually I feel #14 of Part 1 from the Forming Consciences document is so important to reflect on as Christians that I am going to quote all of it. (To read the entire document, visit www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/faithfulcitizenship/upload).

  • #14 “Unfortunately, politics in our country often can be a contest of powerful interests, partisan attacks, …, and media hype. The Church calls for a different kind of political engagement: one shaped by the moral convictions of well formed consciences and focused on the dignity of every human being, the pursuit of the common good, and the protection of the weak and the vulnerable. As Pope Francis reminds us, ‘Politics, though often denigrated, remains a lofty vocation and one of the highest forms of charity, inasmuch as it seeks the common good … I beg the Lord to grant us more politicians who are genuinely disturbed by the state of society, the people, the lives of the poor!’ (EG, #205) The Catholic call to the faithful citizenship which affirms the importance of political participation, should help transform the party to which we belong; we should not let the party transform us in such a way that we neglect or deny fundamental moral truths or approve intrinsically evil acts. We are called to bring together our principles and our political choices, our values and our votes, to help build a civilization of truth and love.” Do I take my voting responsibility this seriously?

Our long-time custodian and maintenance person, Jerry Gallisdorfer, will be retiring at the end of September. We owe him our deep thanks for his competence and dedication to Blessed Trinity and wish him a full and happy retirement……..

St. Benedict ~ “Once again our nation is mourning the loss of innocent life. As news from Dallas continues to unfold, we receive it with broken hearts, dismay, and concern for the direction in which our nation is heading. St. Benedict (whose feast we celebrate on Monday, July 11) understood political unrest, cultural decay, violence, fear, and confusion. He was born during the fall of the Western Roman Empire and his Rule can serve as an important guide to us as we navigate the unfamiliar waters of violence, anger, and fear within our contemporary nation and world. Author, speaker, and Benedictine Oblate Pamela Patnode will be discussing important truths found within the Rule of St. Benedict that can help us during these uncertain times. Tune into Relevant Radio on Monday, July 11 (7:00am ET)….” www.relevantradio.com. From Philomena Press, LLC

Faithful Citizenship: A message from Sister Maureen Harris ~ “Concerned about the upcoming election? I am. I hope to have a few remarks each week taken from the document A Call to Political Responsibility from the Catholic Bishops of the United States – ‘Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship.’ (It is online if you want to read it yourself at www.usccb.org/issues-and-action/faithfulcitizenship/upload.) There are three parts to the document. I will begin with highlights from Part 1 – the text stresses that ‘the work for justice requires that the mind and heart of Catholics be educated and formed to know and practice the whole faith.’ Among those teachings are the four basic principles of Catholic social doctrine: the dignity of the human person, the common good, subsidiarity, and solidarity.

  • #7 – No one can tell us for whom or against whom to vote. The Bishops’ purpose is to help Catholics form their consciences in accordance with God’s truth.
  • #8 – We encourage Catholics to seek those resources authorized by their bishops, their state Catholic conferences, and the USCCB.
  • #9 – The Church’s obligation to participate in shaping the moral character of society is a requirement of our faith.
  • #10 – At the center of these truths is respect for the dignity of every person. This is the core of Catholic moral and social teaching. We are called to practice Christ’s commandment to “love one another” (Jn. 13:34).

I hope you will find this helpful and encourage you to get out and vote.”

Annual Mission Appeal ~ This year our Annual Mission Appeal will take place on the weekend of July 9/10. Here at Blessed Trinity we will be welcoming Rev. Anthony Boothali from the Society for Faith and Children’s Education (S FACE). Father Anthony will share the vision of the Society to “hear the voice of the poor” through their mission activity as they seek to be the hands and feet of Christ in India. The primary goal of S FACE is to provide post-secondary education to young adults in developing countries. Over the last eight years S FACE has sponsored or is currently sponsoring over 300 students with a 3 year scholarship. They have also begun a new endeavor, building the S FACE Mission Center where further faith formation and retreats will continue to nourish the spiritual life of the young people.  Please be as generous as possible during our Annual Mission Appeal Weekend.

Keeping the children’s best interests a top priority is not always easy in the turmoil of divorce and separation. Parents can learn how to develop a “professional” relationship with their co-parent for the benefit of the children – and oneself. Our Kids: Parent Education and Awareness programs, offered in the 8 counties of the diocese, are designed for any parents who have experienced conflict regarding custody and/or visitation issues. For details, call your local Catholic Charities office or 896-6390. Check us out at www.ccwny.org. You can also find us on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.
