“Companions” on Your Lenten Journey ~ The Parish Council has created two documents to assist our parishioners on their Lenten journey to a joyful Easter season: (1) a compilation of suggested daily prayer intentions and (2) a complete calendar of religious services, special programs and activities from Ash Wednesday through May 2, 2020. Please use these links to view them or pick up a hard copy the next time you are at church.
Transfigure Us, O Lord: Musical selection during Lent can be very tricky – many of the hymns appropriate for this season are written in what is known as a minor key. That means they tend to sound very sad. I really love the concept of transfiguration during Lent. Being changed by journeying with Christ is anything but sad – which is why I seek out hymns that help to fortify us during this solemn time. Today’s Communion hymn, Bob Hurd’s Transfigure Us, O Lord, is one of my favorites. I often find myself praying the words throughout Lent.

Lenten Journey Masses ~ The second in a series of five Monday evening services at our CCCB parishes is a 6:30pm Mass on Monday, March 9, at Sisters’ Hospital (2nd Floor Chapel), 2157 Main Street. It will be preceded by recitation of the Rosary at 6pm. Blessed Trinity will host the Journey Mass on March 16. Click HERE for the complete schedule.
Our annual Soup Supper and Lenten Program will take place on Tuesday, March 10, beginning at 5:30pm in St. Charles Hall. If you are able to volunteer to bring soup, bread, or dessert, please sign up on the sheets located on the tables at the church’s side entrances. Then plan to stay for Bob Heicklen’s presentation on Dr. Scott Hahn’s The Fourth Cup, Unveiling the Mystery of The Last Supper and the Cross, an exploration of the connection and meaning between Passover and the Redemption of Good Friday and Easter.
Lenten Stations of the Cross continue at 6pm this Friday, March 13. They will continue in church at the same time every Friday through Friday, April 3.

Just for Kids ~ Handouts and activities to occupy children during Mass are now available in church. They can be found on the table at the (wheelchair ramp) side entrance. Please call Pat Dyer (716-256-2598) if you see that she has not left enough copies for everyone who would like to have one.
The Annual Catholic Charities Appeal has started. Donated funds go to agencies run by Catholic Charities or to the Fund for the Faith that supports diocesan programs such as campus and hospital ministries. None of the funds collected for Catholic Charities will be used for legal settlements or awards to abuse victims. Pledge cards are in the mail to you. They include an option that allows you to direct your contribution to Catholic Charities, the Fund for the Faith, or both. Please give generously. You may place your Catholic Charities Appeal envelope in the collection basket or mail your donation/pledge card directly to the diocese. (It will be credited to our parish). If you are in need of a pledge card or have questions, contact Bob Heicklen, 716-881-3793.

Know Your Faith: Why are prayer, fasting, and almsgiving especially important during Lent?
Prayer: Prayer is our conversation with God. It is through prayer that we find the strength to fast. It is through prayer that we develop a closer, more intimate relationship with God. This relationship makes us so grateful for the blessings he has bestowed upon us, that we eagerly give to those less fortunate than us. The Church, in its wisdom, understands that prayer is essential to any action we Christians may undertake.
Fasting: Fasting is one of the most ancient actions linked to Lent. Fasting rules have changed through the ages, but throughout Church history fasting has been considered sacred. The prophet Isaiah insists that fasting without changing our behavior is not pleasing to God. Therefore, the goal of fasting is linked with prayer. The pangs of hunger remind us of our hunger for God, and prayer and fasting together brings us to what Lent is about – a deeper conversion.
Almsgiving: It should be obvious by now, that almsgiving is simply a response by us to God, a response that we have come to through prayer and fasting. It is an expression of our gratitude for all that God has given us, and a realization that in the Body of Christ, it is never just “me and God.” Through prayer and fasting we come to a deeper understanding that the needs of all are the responsibility of all in the Body of Christ. Works of charity and the promotion of justice are integral elements of the Christian way of life we began when we were baptized.

For the convenience of donors, we now have envelopes specifically designed for Under This Roof contributions, including “in memoriam” tributes. Are you thinking of inviting a friend to join us for worship? Why not present your personal note of invitation written on the back of one of our new church “business cards.” You will find both of these outreach aids on the guest book table at the middle crossing of the church.
Congregation Book Read ~ On Sunday, March 22, after 10am Mass, you are invited to join us for a brunch and Congregation Book Read in St Charles Hall. As part of our Lenten journey, many of us are in the midst of reading Rediscover Jesus by author Matthew Kelly. You do not need to have a copy of the book to join us to listen, share food, thoughts, and reflections.
The Diocese of Buffalo has joined other faith communities and civic organizations in partnering with the Census Bureau to help encourage all people in our community to participate in the 2020 Census. The census is a once-in-a-decade chance to inform how billions of dollars in funding are allocated for critical public services. Census statistics are used to determine the number of seats each state receives in the U.S. House of Representatives, and will also have an impact on planning and funding for health clinics and highways, fire departments and disaster response, education programs such as Head Start and college tuition assistance, and so much more. You can inspire others. Tell everyone – your friends and family, your neighbors and co-workers – that you will complete the census, and tell them why it’s important that they respond too. Personal Prayer Requests ~ We are continuing the practice started during the Christmas season of remembering your personal prayer requests at daily Masses. Just write them out and place your prayer petitions in the basket on the communion rail in front of the baptismal font. There is no need to provide your name. Your intentions will be remembered at Masses throughout the week.

Do you know that Mass is the highest and greatest form of prayer? The Catechism of the Catholic Church reveals that “from the very earliest days of the Christian religion, [the Church] has honored with great respect the memory of the dead.” In its reference to the Second Vatican Council’s conclusion that “it is a wholly and a wholesome thought to pray for the dead that they may be loosed from their sins,” the Catechism adds: “Our prayer for them is capable of not only helping them, but also of making their intercession for us effective.” Consider contacting the church office (716-833-0301) to request a Mass for yourself, your deceased loved ones, or for any intention. The stipend is $15.

Host Families Sought. Cardinal O’Hara High School is offering a new international student program and seeks families for 20 students from Germany. The students, who speak English and are honor roll students, will attend Cardinal O’Hara from April 6-24. During Easter break, the students will take excursions in and around Buffalo. Wednesday March 11 at 7pm ~ “Voices of Mercy,” made up of the missionaries of St Luke’s Mission of Mercy, will present sacred music at St. Philip the Apostle Church (950 Losson Road in Cheektowaga). They will lead the Stations of the Cross, followed by a Holy Communion service. A free-will offering will be taken.
Lenten Retreat, Saturday, March 14 from 10:00am to 3:30pm at Fourteen Holy Helpers (Msgr. Ebner Hall – 1345 Indian Church Road in West Seneca). Begins with registration and light refreshments at 10 am, presentations start at 10:30 am and run until approximately 3:30 pm; lunch included. After the retreat, the Sacrament of Reconciliation will be available in the church; Mass at 4:30 pm. The Ladies Sodality Meeting is this Sunday, March 1, following 10 AM Mass. Their group discussion and prayer service honoring Saints Perpetua and Felicity will be preceded by a brief business meeting in St. Charles Hall. Refreshments will be served.
A second collection for Black & Native American Missions will take place on the weekend of February 29/March 1. Please be as generous as possible in your support of The United States’ Home Missions.
Who is that Knocking at the Door? Our 2020 Lenten Journey began on Ash Wednesday. In the world of optometry, “20/20” refers to the clarity or sharpness of vision It is not an indication of perfection; it’s a static measurement of one aspect of sight. Our music ministry requires us to have vision, and that is never more evident than during the journey to the Triduum. We need more than 20/20 vision to meet the musical needs of a Church that is moving and changing. Our Church is weeping and struggling – and our earthly home is environmentally challenged and there is increasing violence around us.
At Blessed Trinity, the Music Ministry tries to think sharper than 20/20. While traditional music is very important in liturgy, our musical prayer needs to evolve as the Church’s needs and concerns do. This Lenten season, you will hear some old favorites – but some new songs, too. Congregational suggestions are taken very seriously, so please keep them coming. Let’s pray and work together to help shape the future of our Liturgy. As today’s choral meditation encouraged, “Oh, sinner, why don’t you answer? Somebody’s knocking at your door.” Music is one aspect of achieving our Church’s vision for the future. Will you open the door?

Congregation Book Read ~ As part of our Parish Lenten Journey, Blessed Trinity is happy to host a “Congregation Book Read.“ All members of our parish are invited to participate. The book is entitled Rediscover Jesus by author Matthew Kelly. It is perfect for Lent as each day there are a few pages to read along with a scripture verse, a point to ponder, and a question to personally reflect on along with a prayer. It will be a good and interesting way to continue developing our relationship with Jesus as we move through the Lenten season. Copies of Rediscover Jesus are now available at no charge, and everyone is invited to St. Charles Hall to discuss the book after Mass on Sunday, March 22.
Peaceprints “Thank You” ~ The parish has received a heartfelt letter of gratitude from the Executive Director of Peaceprints of Western New York, Cindi McEachon. Ms. McEachon acknowledged their appreciation for the kindness and support offered in the 2100 gift bags offered by our Parish to incarcerated individuals.
The Buffalo Urban League Scholarship Program application deadline is March 13 and is open to high school seniors or recent HSE/GED recipients who plan to attend college in the Fall 2020. Please contact the church office (716-833-0301) if you wish to have a copy of the application.
The Diocese of Buffalo has joined other faith communities and civic organizations in partnering with the Census Bureau to help encourage all people in our community to participate in the 2020 Census. The census is a once-in-a-decade chance to inform how billions of dollars in funding are allocated for critical public services. Census statistics are used to determine the number of seats each state receives in the U.S. House of Representatives, and will also have an impact on planning and funding for health clinics and highways, fire departments and disaster response, education programs such as Head Start and college tuition assistance, and so much more. You can inspire others. Tell everyone – your friends and family, your neighbors and co-workers – that you will complete the census, and tell them why it’s important that they respond too. Personal Prayer Requests ~ We are continuing the practice started during the Christmas season of remembering your personal prayer requests at daily Masses. Just write them out and place your prayer petitions in the basket on the communion rail in front of the baptismal font. There is no need to provide your name. Your intentions will be remembered at Masses throughout the week.

Blessed Trinity docents end their February 22, 2020 tour in the Carriage House at the Darwin Martin House Complex.
Members of Blessed Trinity’s docent team turned Saturday, February 22, into a Busman’s Holiday without ever leaving the neighborhood. They toured the Darwin Martin House on Jewett Parkway, which was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and completed in 1905 – just one year before the founding of our parish less than a mile away. They all enjoyed the opportunity to ask rather than answer questions, and had a chance to share their impressions over lunch at the Parkside Meadow Restaurant.

Ash Wednesday is this Wednesday, February 26, Our solemn observance of Lent will begin with Mass and Distribution of Ashes at 6pm. There will be NO morning Mass at 11am.
Lenten Stations of the Cross begin at 6pm this Friday, February 28. They will continue in church at the same time every Friday through Friday, April 3.
A Little Help From Our Friends ~ If the Blessed Trinity Choir sounded exceptionally beautiful on Sunday [February 23], it was because we were not alone! The Choir from St. John XXIII Parish in West Seneca, under the direction of the Church Musicians’ Guild’s Immediate Past-President Bill Fay, joined us in the loft for Part 1 of our 2020 Choir Exchange. This is the second time this choir has visited and enhanced our Liturgy. They help us to remember that we are many parts, but we are all one Body.
Why should a small church like Blessed Trinity participate in this type of endeavor? First of all, we have a beautiful space with a marvelous acoustic and we are privileged to have two fine instruments right in our sanctuary. There are many churches that do not often have the opportunity to experience such opulence at Mass. We also have an appreciative congregation that supports the Music Ministry by helping to build the music repertoire at Mass by offering feedback and suggestions – that means the music at Blessed Trinity better represents the people who worship in this space. Our choir members are constantly trying to improve their vocal abilities while praising God and enhancing our liturgies – and that means they welcome suggestions from other Music Directors who bring a fresh perspective to our ministry. Also, it is wonderful to sit next to and sing with new people who love music also love our Lord – and then pray with them in their space.

The lives and martyrdom of Saints Perpetua and Felicity will be the discussion topic at the Sodality’s March 1, 2020 meeting.
The Ladies Sodality will meet next Sunday, March 1, following 10 AM Mass. All women of the parish are invited to join us for a group discussion and prayer service in St. Charles Hall focusing on the lives and death of Saints Perpetua and Felicity, two early martyrs of the Church whose feast day we celebrate on March 7. The program will be preceded by a brief business meeting, and refreshments will be served. Lenten Journey Masses ~ The first in a series of five Monday evening services at our CCCB parishes is a 6:30pm Mass on Monday, March 2, at Ss. Columba-Brigid, 75 Hickory St. (off Clinton). Know Your Faith: Why seek God’s will when he has given us free will to make choice?
In our advanced world often times we tend to believe in ourselves, have great plans without considering if they conform to God’s will. Why seek God’s will when he has given us free will to make choice? Because we are imperfect beings striving for perfection, we make mistakes and bad choices sometimes that can cause great damage to our lives and society, so with all our inadequacies we need the intervention of the perfect being God, to perfect us in all we do.
Let us pray ~ Lord, you know what is best; let this be done or that be done as you please. Give what you will, as much as you will, when you will. Do with me as you know best, as will most please you, and as will be for your greater honor. Place me where you will, and deal with me freely in all things. Behold, I am your servant, ready to obey in all things. Not for myself do I desire to live, but for you! Amen.

Adult Confirmation Candidates ~ There will be a meeting at 9:30 a.m. in the church on Sunday, February 16 for all adults (out of high school) who have been baptized and have made First Communion and are interested in being confirmed. If we are able to work out some meeting times, Confirmation could take place at the April 11 Easter Vigil service. If not baptized at Blessed Trinity, please bring your baptismal certificate. If you do not have one, please find out where you were baptized so that we can obtain one for you. Contact Pat Dyer at 716-256-2598 if you have any questions.
Anointing of the Sick and Well-Aging will take place immediately following Mass this Sunday, February 16.
Piano! ~ We are lucky at Blessed Trinity to have the beautiful Tellers-Kent organ in the loft as well as a baby grand piano in our sanctuary for use during the liturgy. It’s fun for the choir to stay connected with the congregation and come down from the loft to share in the liturgy from time to time. This week’s hymns were selected because they sound great with piano. Please let a choir member know if you enjoyed this week’s offerings as we prepare for Lent. Faith Formation Programs for All Ages ~ A general meeting (for all) will be held on Saturday, February 22 at 3:45 p.m. and Sunday, February 23 following the 10 AM Mass to discuss Faith Formation Plans. All are welcome. Come to hear the plans in the works and let us know what you’d like to see here at Blessed Trinity for youth as well as adults. Pat Dyer will have activities for the kids during this time to keep them busy.
Birthday Blessing for everyone born during the month of February will take place at the end of Mass on Sunday, February 23. Our monthly coffee hour will follow in St. Charles Hall.
All women of the parish are invited to participate in the Ladies Sodality March program, “Celebrating Women Witnesses.” The subject of our group discussion and prayer service on Sunday, March 1, will be Saints Perpetua and Felicity, two early martyrs of the Church whose feast day we celebrate on March 7. A handout summarizing the lives and deaths of the women will be available in church beginning February 15. Look for “Perpetua and Felicity, Courageous unto Death” on the tables inside each church entrance. Please take a copy home and read it in preparation for our faith sharing discussion.
Prayer Partner Information ~ Lent is just around the corner. February 26 is Ash Wednesday. That means it is sign-up time for prayer partners. We hope you will participate this year. Praying for another in need is one of the Spiritual Works of Mercy. If you haven’t experienced being a prayer partner yet, we hope you will this year. During the Lenten season you will be given a name of someone from one of the participating parishes to pray for during Lent and Easter and they will have your name. Signup sheets are located on the tables near the church doors. You may also submit your request for a Prayer Partner using the contact form below. Please be sure to mention “Prayer Partner” in your message.
Just for Kids ~ Handouts and activities to occupy children during Mass are now available in church. They can be found on the table at the (wheelchair ramp) side entrance. Congregation Book Read ~ As part of our Parish Lenten Journey, Blessed Trinity is happy to host a “Congregation Book Read.“ All members of our parish are invited to participate. The book is entitled Rediscover Jesus by author Matthew Kelly. It is perfect for Lent as each day there are a few pages to read along with a scripture verse, a point to ponder, and a question to personally reflect on along with a prayer. It will be a good and interesting way to continue developing our relationship with Jesus as we move through the Lenten season. Copies of Rediscover Jesus will be available after Mass on Sunday, February 23, and everyone is invited to St. Charles Hall to discuss the book after Mass on Sunday, March 22.
Family Promise “Thank You” ~ The parish has received a heartfelt thank you letter from Luanne Firestone, Executive Director of Family Promise of Western New York for our $915 contribution. The combination of cash and gift cards were donated through the Christmas Giving Tree Project and will help numerous families recovering from homelessness.
Personal Prayer Requests ~ We are continuing the practice started during the Christmas season of remembering your personal prayer requests at daily Masses. Just write them out and place your prayer petitions in the basket on the communion rail in front of the baptismal font. There is no need to provide your name. Your intentions will be remembered at Masses throughout the week.
The Buffalo Urban League Scholarship Program application deadline is March 13 and is open to high school seniors or recent HSE/GED recipients who plan to attend college in the Fall 2020. Please contact the church office (716-833-0301) if you wish to have a copy of the application.
The Diocese of Buffalo has joined other faith communities and civic organizations in partnering with the Census Bureau to help encourage all people in our community to participate in the 2020 Census. The census is a once-in-a-decade chance to inform how billions of dollars in funding are allocated for critical public services. Census statistics are used to determine the number of seats each state receives in the U.S. House of Representatives, and will also have an impact on planning and funding for health clinics and highways, fire departments and disaster response, education programs such as Head Start and college tuition assistance, and so much more. You can inspire others. Tell everyone – your friends and family, your neighbors and co-workers – that you will complete the census, and tell them why it’s important that they respond too. Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, February 11.
Vincent Mondo’s painting in the Lady Chapel (left side of Sanctuary) is of the Virgin Mary “seen fulfilling the prophecy of Genesis (3:15), with the serpent under her feet.” The kneeling figure on the left is “St. Bernadette Soubirous (1844-1879), to whom Our Lady appeared at Lourdes, France in 1858…. The message of Lourdes was really an invitation to trust in the power of prayer regardless of how desperate the situation is….” (Rev. Walter Kern’s Guidebook to Blessed Trinity Roman Catholic Church, p. 44). Surely this message resonates as strongly today as it did in 1858.

Music Helps ~ Did you notice that this week’s readings were a continuation of the Sermon on the Mount, yet we did not hear the first part of those readings last week. Sometimes, the church musician is challenged to help put the readings into proper context for better understanding. Our communion hymn, David Haas’ Blest Are They, was a good way to provide the “back story” for today’s Gospel.
Blest are they, the poor in spirit, theirs is the kingdom of God. Blest are they, full of sorrow, they shall be consoled.
REFRAIN: Rejoice and be glad! Blessed are you, holy are you! Rejoice and be glad! Yours is the kingdom of God!

Know Your Faith: Why did Jesus say: No one knows the day or hour when the Son of Man will come?
This question is an interesting one that reminds us about the two natures of Jesus: The nature of God and the nature of man (the Divine nature and the human nature). And during his entire life while on earth, Jesus displayed those natures. Expressions of his human nature are seen, for example, when he turned over the tables of the money changers at the temple (Matthew 21:12), when he cursed the fig tree (Mark 11:12-25), when Jesus wept (John 11:35), when he said “behold thy mother” (John 19:26), and also one of his final words: “I thirst” (John 19:28). All these words and actions can be seen as an expression of the human nature of Jesus with spiritual undertones.
At the garden of Gethsemane (Matthew 26:36-46) the two natures came into play when he said, “Take this cup away from me….” and later, “If this is your will, let it be done.”
As Jesus expresses his divine power through his miracles, he also expresses his divine nature by knowing the thoughts of others. Jesus affirms his divine nature at different instances throughout his ministry, “The Father and I are one” (John 10:30).
As Jesus answers the question about his second coming at the end of time, he expresses his human nature by saying, “No one knows when the son of God will come.” referring to the second coming. As God, Jesus knows everything; he tells us that before Abraham, he was.
So why did Jesus not tell us the exact time of his second coming? Jesus sees that preparing for the coming is more important than knowing the exact time. That is why he invites us to be ready at all times. To be ready entails making efforts to live a better life every day. The practice of living a better life helps not only us, but [also help] others and our society to be a better place. So we are invited to make efforts every day, because preparation for the coming of God’s kingdom should be continuous.
Lord, help us to always cooperate with your grace daily to prepare for your coming.

Blessing of Throats ~ Monday, February 3, is the optional Memorial of the St. Blaise, who was the bishop of Sebastea in Armenia and a doctor. The first known record of the saint’s life comes from the medical writings of Aëtius Amidenus, where St. Blaise is recorded as helping with patients suffering from objects stuck in their throat. He was martyred in 316 A.D. The traditional Blessing of Throats will take place after Mass on Sunday, February 2.
Friday, February 7 is First Friday. Join in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in the Daily Mass Chapel from 8:00 – 10:45 a.m., followed by Benediction and daily Mass.

Prayer Partner Information ~ Lent is just around the corner. February 26 is Ash Wednesday. That means it is sign-up time for prayer partners. We hope you will participate this year. Praying for another in need is one of the Spiritual Works of Mercy. If you haven’t experienced being a prayer partner yet, we hope you will this year. During the Lenten season you will be given a name of someone from one of the participating parishes to pray for during Lent and Easter and they will have your name. Signup sheets are located on the tables near the church doors. You may also submit your request for a Prayer Partner using the contact form below. In His Temple Now Behold Him ~ Traditionally the end of the Christmas Season, the prayers of the Roman Missal still make reference to The Presentation of the Lord as a Feast of Light, 40 days after Christmas. Members of the Ladies Sodality are reminded that January means membership renewal. Dues for 2020 will remain at $5.00 and are being collected by Vice President, Mickey Dick. She will be happy to accept them in person, or you may mail your check payable to “Ladies Sodality of Blessed Trinity” to her c/o the church. (If you don’t want to write a check for such a small amount, make it $10 and she will credit you for 2021 – even if there is a dues increase). Life membership status begins at age 80 and no dues are required. You may use the renewal form reprinted in the bulletin or the “Contact Form” below to submit your name, mailing address, email address (if you check it daily) for time-sensitive member notifications, preferred phone number, and date of birth (just month & day). Anything But Ordinary, Part II ~ Last week, we began using a new Mass setting, the Mass of St. Frances Cabrini, composed by Kevin Keil in 2007.
St. Frances Xavier Cabrini was born as Maria Francesca Cabrini on July 15, 1850 in Sant’ Angelo Lodigiano, Lombardy, Italy. She was born two months premature and the youngest of thirteen children. Unfortunately, only three of her siblings survived past adolescence and Frances would live most of her life in a fragile and delicate state of health.
She became dedicated to living a life for religious work from a young age and received a convent education at a school run by the Daughters of the Sacred Heart. She graduated with high honors and a teaching certificate. When Frances was 18, she applied for admission to the religious congregation of the Daughters of the Sacred Heart, but was turned down because of her poor health. Instead, a priest asked her to teach at the House of Providence Orphanage in Cadagono, Italy. She taught at the girls’ school for six years and drew a community of women in to live the religious way of life.
In 1877, she became Mother Cabrini after she finally made her vows and took the religious habit, also adding Xavier to her name in honor of St. Francis Xavier. When the House of Providence Orphanage closed, her bishop asked her, along with six other women from her orphanage in Cadagono, to found the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart to care for the poor children in both schools and hospitals. Frances composed the Rule and Constitution for the religious institute. In its first five years, the institute established seven homes and a free school and nursery. Frances wanted to continue her mission in China, but Pope Leo XIII urged her to go to the United States, a nation that was becoming flooded with Italian immigrants who needed her help. “Not to the East, but the West,” was his advice to her.
On March 31, 1889, Frances arrived in New York City along with six other sisters ready to begin her new journey. However, right from the beginning she encountered many disappointments and hardships. The house originally attended for her new orphanage was no longer available, but Frances did not give up, even though the archbishop insisted she return to Italy. Housing was found with the convent of the Sisters of Charity. Frances then received permission to found an orphanage in what is now West Park, New York and now known as Saint Cabrini Home.
Filled with a deep trust in God and endowed with a wonderful administrative ability, Frances founded 67 institutions, including orphanages, schools, and hospitals, within 35 years dedicated to caring for the poor, uneducated, sick, abandoned, and especially for the Italian immigrants. Her institutions were spread out in places all over the United States, including New York, Colorado, and Illinois. She became a naturalized citizen of the US in 1909.
Frances was known for being as resourceful as she was prayerful. She was always able to find people to donate their money, time, and support for her institutions. Frances has two miracles attributed to her. She restored sight to a child who was believed to have been blinded by excess silver nitrate, and she healed a terminally ill member of her congregation.
St. Frances Xavier Cabrini was beatified on November 13, 1938, by Pope Pius XI and canonized by Pope Pius XII on July 7, 1946, making her the first United States citizen to be canonized. Her feast day is celebrated on November 13 and she is the patron saint of immigrants.
The Choir will be asking the intercession of St. Frances Cabrini as we try to find ways to raise money to restore the organ at Blessed Trinity. What a great example of the attitude we need to overcome financial adversity and reclaim our beautiful heritage.

Anointing of the Sick and Well-Aging on January 19, following Sunday Mass.
Catholic Relief Services Collection ~ Our second collection on the weekend of January 25/26 benefits the Catholic Relief Services. Your contribution supports the “giving of hope” by funding several national Catholic organizations that:
Aid victims of natural disasters and armed conflict;
Provide agricultural assistance,water programs, and health care;
Resettle newcomers to the United States;
Help alleviate poverty in developing countries by providing credit to small entrepreneurs;
Provide legal support services for poor immigrants;
Advocate for policies and programs that promote global justice and peace.

Our Monthly Coffee Hour will take place after Mass on Sunday, January 26, in St. Charles Hall. Members of the Ladies Sodality will be our hosts.
Anything But Ordinary ~ Ordinary Time is a good opportunity to change the Mass music, and we will be singing the Mass of St. Frances Cabrini until the beginning of Lent. Kevin Keil composed this Mass setting in 2007, making it a relatively new addition to our Breaking Bread hymnal. We change Mass settings periodically in order to keep our liturgies dynamic, *not* to stress out our congregation. The number of the Mass setting is always posted on the hymn board – it’s that vertical number on the right. It is always okay for you to speak any of the Mass parts during the service if you are unfamiliar with the tune or merely don’t wish to sing. It is helpful to follow along in the hymnal even if you cannot read music. The melodies are quite simple and repetitive, and it won’t be long before you are humming along or singing them in the car. Next week, I’ll share some information about the life of St. Frances Cabrini – her life is certainly worth remembering – and we will only be using this new music until Ash Wednesday, so it won’t be long before we sing something a bit more familiar at Mass. Did you know Blessed Trinity Church has a congregation that supports Musical Ministry in Western New York? Join us up in the loft to help enhance our Liturgies – and feel the love. Personal Prayer Requests ~ As this Christmas season ends, you are invited to continue the practice of submitting your personal prayer requests. Just write them out and place your prayer petitions in the basket on the communion rail in front of the baptismal font. There is no need to provide your name. Your intentions will be remembered at Masses throughout the week.
Members of the Ladies Sodality are reminded that January means membership renewal. Dues for 2020 will remain at $5.00 and are being collected by Vice President, Mickey Dick. She will be happy to accept them in person, or you may mail your check payable to “Ladies Sodality of Blessed Trinity” to her c/o the church. (If you don’t want to write a check for such a small amount, make it $10 and she will credit you for 2021 – even if there is a dues increase). Life membership status begins at age 80 and no dues are required. You may use the renewal form reprinted in the bulletin or the “Contact Form” below to submit your name, mailing address, email address (if you check it daily) for time-sensitive member notifications, preferred phone number, and date of birth (just month & day). If you are not a member but would like to know more about the Sodality, please contact Mickey (716-832-2540) or President Vera Andrew (716-704-2944). Our first meeting of 2020 is scheduled for Sunday, March 1.
Our Christmas Decorations are safely stowed away for another year, thanks to the faithful group of volunteers who turned out on Monday evening, January 13, and made quick work of the end-of-season task. The poinsettias still looked so lovely, that we saved them for another week.

Do you know that Mass is the highest and greatest form of prayer? The Catechism of the Catholic Church reveals that “from the very earliest days of the Christian religion, [the Church] has honored with great respect the memory of the dead.” In its reference to the Second Vatican Council’s conclusion that “it is a wholly and a wholesome thought to pray for the dead that they may be loosed from their sins,” the Catechism adds: “Our prayer for them is capable of not only helping them, but also of making their intercession for us effective.” Consider contacting the church office (716-833-0301) to request a Mass for yourself, your deceased loved ones, or for any intention. The stipend is $15.

News from our Vicariate Cluster and the Wider Community
Evening of Prayer for Healing, Friday January 24, 7-8:30pm. Presented by the Northern Erie Vicariate Parishes at St. Amelia Church (2999 Eggert Road in Tonawanda). All are welcome to join us as we pray for victims and all who are affected by the abuse crisis.
