Alumni Memorial Mass
Oct 6, 2024 at 10AM

Next Sunday, October 6, is Alumni Sunday. We are happy to again welcome alumni of Blessed Trinity School for their annual Memorial Mass—their seventeenth since our 2006 parish centennial. The annual observance includes their all-class reunion in St. Charles Hall following the Mass. Please take time to personally greet people who may be sitting near you and encourage them to worship with us at other times during the year. Blessed Trinity School operated from 1909-1975, educating more than 2,300 students. From the beginning it was staffed by the Sisters of St. Joseph, who were joined by lay faculty in the 1950s.

A Sonnet for St. Francis. This sonnet, entitled “Francis, Rebuild My Church,” was written by Rev. Malcolm Guite, an Anglican priest and poet. He wrote it for the feast of St. Francis of Assisi (Oct 4) and also dedicated it to Pope Francis.

‘Francis rebuild my church which, as you see
Is falling into ruin.’ From the cross
Your saviour spoke to you and speaks to us
Again through you. Undoing set you free,
Loosened the traps of trappings, cast away
The trammelling of all that costly cloth
We wind our saviour in. At break of day
He set aside his grave-clothes. Your new birth
Came like a daybreak too, naked and true
To poverty and to the gospel call,
You woke to Christ and Christ awoke in you
And set to work through all your love and skill
To make our ruin good, to bless and heal
To wake the Christ in us and make us whole.

Skulls— devils— monsters— graveyards: Just symbols we associate with Halloween?

You’ll find them all in the medieval iconography displayed on the facade of Blessed Trinity Church when you take the October 27 tour of this Buffalo Landmark, listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Step inside and follow an All-Saints Day procession of more than 100 angels and saints from the Hebrew Bible and New Testament making their way to heaven in the church’s great dome. Docents will highlight the spectacular interior details of the church and its extensive display of Christian symbolism. Enjoy All-Hallows’ Eve selections on the church’s 1927 Tellers-Kent pipe organ and vocalizations by the Angel of Music.

Completed in 1928 at a cost of over a half million dollars, the church is considered one of the purest examples of 12th Century Lombard-Romanesque architecture in the United States. The exceptional level of artisanship involved in its creation marks Blessed Trinity as a work of art that can never be replicated.

General Thomas DeLuca, Class of 1967
Elected Supreme President
Knights of St. John International

Thomas DeLuca, a son of Blessed Trinity Roman Catholic parish, was elected Supreme President of the 20,000-member Knights of St. John International at its convention in Buffalo, N.Y. in July, 2024.

Under its constitutional guidelines, the Knights gather every two years, but it had been six years, because of the pandemic, before the Knights gathered from around the world to select a new head.

DeLuca wondered whether competition would emerge for the presidency for the Roman Catholic order, an international Catholic fraternal service organization with members in nine countries, including countries as diverse as Germany and Nigeria. However, DeLuca was elected without contest as the head of the order, incorporated some 138 years ago. He is committed not only to aggressively shepherding the Knights in the twenty-first century, but also to growing the order, with specific outreach to young men who are seeking a fraternity that is both social and spiritual.

Describing the Knights as “a great group of guys,” DeLuca added: “You know I am an only child, so the Knights are really my brothers.” Membership in the Knights is also part of his legacy. His father, Horace DeLuca, now passed, was a Knight as is his son, Joseph.

DeLuca, 71, graduated from Blessed Trinity School in 1967 and joined the Knights at age sixteen while attending Bishop Fallon High School. An active Knight for 55 years, largely in leadership roles, DeLuca had served as the Knight’s first vice president for a decade before being elected president.

He has now officially retired after a career in technology and project management although he continues to receive offers to continue. In the view of the General, being president of the Knights of St. John is more than a full-time job.

DeLuca grew up in Buffalo and is now a resident of Cheektowaga, N.Y. He is a graduate of D’Youville University. He met his wife, Cindy, there and history repeated itself when his daughter, Amy, met her husband there.

News from our Parish

The Diocesan Decision on Church Closures was announced by Bishop Fisher on September 9. Please see Father Bob’s  “Road to Renewal Update” in this Sunday’s bulletin.

Docent Eleanor Ash explains the symbolic placement of artwork in the narthex as Rafael Rondon prepares to explain the architectural design of the nave.

This Sunday, September 22, is our final “Sacred Space Sunday.” It started as an experiment to welcome summer visitors and honor Bob Heicklen and his commitment to outreach. It has been a success thus far, with both visitors and parishioners remaining after Mass for the three previous events. Please take time after Mass this Sunday to pose your questions about our history, art and architecture to members of our docent team.

The Women’s Guild of St. Martin de Porres and the Ladies Sodality of Blessed Trinity invite the women of Family 21 to become better acquainted at the Guild’s Annual Ladies Tea on Saturday, October 5, beginning at Noon in Blessed Trinity’s St. Charles Hall. For shopping purposes, reservations are requested. Please let Laurie Alford know that you plan to attend at lbrownc [at] kent [dot] edu.

Garden Grant Update. Our Lunenfeld Beautification Grant reconciliation documents have been filed, and we thank the dedicated volunteers who planted and maintained our parish flower pots, gardens and lawn over a hot, dry summer. We accidentally underreported volunteer hours last week. In actuality, our garden team numbered 21, and they donated a total of 119 hours between April 20 and Aug 24. Given the $15/hour credit for volunteer hours, we “earned” $1,785.00, which is almost three times our required $600 match! Thanks again to our dedicated landscaping crew.

Is it time to update your contact information? During the pandemic when COVID-19 Protocols prevented many from attending church services, the ability to keep in touch by telephone, mail or email took on increased importance. Because not everyone has computer access, really important information is sent in a letter. Even though you are now able to attend Mass in person, this may be a good time to ask yourself: Does the church office have my correct mailing address and phone number? Have I shared my email address? Make sure that we have been notified of any changes in your contact information by completing this form. This is also a chance to let us know if you: wish to receive the bulletin electronically via email, register as a parishioner, or request envelopes. You can also submit the requested information by phoning our secretary at 716-833-0301 any Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday between 10:30am and 2:30pm; sending an email to blessedtrinitychurch [at] gmail [dot] com; or using the contact feature below to submit the information. If you choose either of the last two, please use “Contact Update” as the subject of the email or message.

It has been a success thus far, with both visitors and parishioners remaining after Mass for the three previous events. Honor our sacred space next Sunday by bringing a friend to experience our faith community and learn about our Landmark church. Bring your questions about our history, art and architecture to our team of friendly docents.

Self-Care Sunday. Blessed Trinity’s Ladies Sodality thanks parishioner Bonnie Hodur Williams for her presentation to women of the parish on Sunday, September 8. Her opening PowerPoint provided steps one can take to care for one’s own physical and emotional well-being—something often neglected by women but essential in order to be an effective caregiver for others. An independent nail stylist, Bonnie also spotlighted several skin and nail care products and demonstrated her ten-minute manicure. Everyone received a ColorSTREET sample bag and a chance to practice an at-home manicure. One lucky lady also won a facial courtesy of Celeste Borczynski of Skin with Celeste.
