New York Landmarks Conservancy’s Sacred Sites Open House

On May 19, 2019, Blessed Trinity will participate in the New York Landmarks Conservancy’s Ninth Annual Sacred Sites Open House Weekend, an event we have supported since 2012. However, this year our church has surely served as an inspiration for the Conservancy’s 2019 theme: Medieval to Modern: Celebrating New York’s Religious Art and Architecture.
As photos included in the Conservancy’s press release reveal, the participating houses of worship will highlight “the broad spectrum of historical periods, faith traditions, and styles of religious architecture found … throughout New York State.” One look at our Landmark edifice, and you will know who puts the “medieval” in Medieval to Modern.

Members of our docent team will be on hand Sunday, May 19, from 12 Noon – 3 p.m. to explain the unique features that make Blessed Trinity Church the purest replication of 12th century Lombard-Romanesque architecture in the United States. You’ll be able to examine its handmade bricks set in a style dating back to the Middle Ages, learn about the elaborate display of medieval iconography on the terra cotta portico, and stand in awe at the more than 2,000 symbols summarizing Christian beliefs in ceramic tiles, paintings, decorative terra cotta, and sculpture. Our site is wheelchair accessible, and visitors are encouraged to bring cameras and binoculars.
On this Sacred Sites Sunday, church tours are free and open to the public. Everyone is also welcome to attend our regular Sunday worship service at 10 a.m.

It’s Another Serving of Christmas Pie
Sunday, December 2, 2018 at 3 p.m.
Maintaining their Christmas Pie Concert tradition, the Freudig Singers of Western New York will usher in the holiday season at Blessed Trinity with a glorious array of choral pieces selected by music director Roland E. Martin. The program will include new works as well as traditional holiday favorites.
As always, “Christmas Pie” features a raffle of signature pies baked by chorus members, and a post-concert reception where audience members are treated to beverages and – you guessed it – a delicious serving of Christmas pie. Ordinary Time begins on Tuesday, January 9 and continues through Tuesday, February 13, the day before Ash Wednesday and the beginning of the Lenten season. Ordinary Time then resumes when the Easter season ends on Monday May 21, the day following Pentecost.
The Annual Diocesan Mass Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr will be held at Ss. Columba-Brigid at 10am, Sunday, January 14. Bishop Malone will be the celebrant of the Mass with guest homilist, Deacon LeRoy T. Gill, Jr. Deacon Gill is chair of the Black Deacons of Chicago. Their priority is to address the violence against black male youth. This year’s theme is The Cost of the Call to Discipleship. It is a goal of the African American Commission of the Buffalo Diocese to raise funds for students of color attending Catholic schools with a collection of theme baskets for an auction. The Commission hopes to collect five or more baskets from each parish of the CCCB. Contact Arlene Feaster at 716-381-3856 if you are planning to donate baskets. Following the Mass, attendees are welcome to participate in the silent auction featuring donated theme baskets.

Speakers will include Dr. Barry Gan, a professor at St. Bonaventure and an expert on Dr. King’s life and the civil rights movement; Pastor James Giles, Executive Director at Greater Works Fellowship and Founder of the Peacekeepers; and Brian Zralek, a VOICE-Buffalo community organizer. The program, which is free, runs from 9am-12Noon in the Ss. Columba-Brigid Church Hall, 75 Hickory Street. Coffee and snacks will be provided. For more information, phone 716-852-3331. We hope that you can attend for at least part of the morning.

May Christ Bless Our Home ~ Epiphany marks the celebration of the manifestation of Christ to the entire world, as the three kings represent “outsiders” who acknowledged Christ as the Son of God. On Epiphany, there is an ancient custom of chalking the doorway above church doors and homes that marks the household for Christ. This year, you will see the inscription “20+C+M+B+18”. The year, 2018, is placed at the beginning and the end; the “+” represents the sign of the cross; the initials CMB stand for Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar as well as the Latin phrase “Christus mansionem benedicat,” which translates to “May Christ bless this house.” You may notice this marking over the doorways leading to the choir loft. We pray Christ will continue to bless and be present in the Music Ministry at Blessed Trinity as we head back into ordinary time. May this Epiphany be a reminder that Christ is incarnate in the love and care we manifest to each other in our ordinary daily lives. Choir practice resumes on February 6, 2018 at 7:00 p.m.

Sodality Dues Reminder for 2018 ~ Membership in the Ladies Sodality of Blessed Trinity runs with the calendar year, and dues become payable each January. Since 2016, we have only one category of membership – member in good standing – and annual dues are $5.00 with checks payable to “Ladies Sodality of Blessed Trinity.” You do not have to pay dues if you are a member in good standing and have reached your 80th birthday. Our Membership Chair, Mickey Dick, is now accepting dues for 2018. If you would like information about the Sodality or becoming a member, please call her (716-832-2540).
Pauline A. Rollek
1928-2017
Remembering Pauline Rollek ~ The Ladies Sodality would like to recognize Pauline Rollek, a member of their board of directors and former treasurer, who passed on December 30, just a month before her 90th birthday. Pauline was a beautiful example of stewardship, contributing her time and talent in many ways during her more than 50 years as a parishioner. Until health issues forced her retirement several years ago, Pauline volunteered as our “Rectory Coordinator,” performing administrative duties as well as cooking and housekeeping. She also cooked for parish functions and fundraisers. Her earliest leadership activities were as a member of the Parent Teacher Association of our grade school. For many years she was one of a group of women who met every Saturday morning to clean the church and care for the altar linens. Pauline loved decorating and flower arranging. Her talents in these areas were displayed in church throughout the year, especially during the Christmas and Easter seasons. She was also a bingo volunteer for more than four decades, working both Thursday and Saturday nights. We ask that you remember Pauline and her family in your prayers and give thanks for the many ways in which she cared for her parish family. A Mass of Christian Burial for Mrs. Rollek was held on Saturday, January 6, with Father Victor Ibhawa and our former pastor, Father George Reger, concelebrating.
Openings for Mass Intentions ~ Thank you to all who have recently placed Mass intentions. We again have openings on Saturdays and Sundays, so please contact the church office (716-833-0301) with your requests. Office hours are: 10:30am-2:30pm, Tuesday through Thursday. The Mass Stipend is $15.
New parking spaces have been added to the wheelchair ramp side of the church to compensate for losing ten spaces behind the old school building (FLARE) with the sale of the building. The new owner plans to rehab the structure into twenty apartments, a project that will certainly benefit the neighborhood.
Important Deadlines to Remember ~ As we begin the new year, please remember to contact our secretary, Pat Pendleton, with dates (even tentative ones) that should appear on the parish calendar. Our bulletin is printed on Thursdays, so announcements should be submitted no later than Noon on the Wednesday prior to the weekend you wish it to appear. Deacon Jimmie Boyd ~ On Sunday, October 16, the parish honored the memory of Deacon Jimmie Boyd with the placing of his name on our memorial plaque. The plaque was presented to the parish in the early 1990s by our Holy Name Society and lists the names and tenure of all pastors and associates who have served our parish. Members of the Boyd family attended both the liturgy and the social which followed the service. Click HERE for additional photos.
October 23 is World Mission Sunday. In announcing his decision to declare a Holy Year of Mercy, Pope Francis said, “Dear brothers and sisters, I have often thought about how the Church might make clear its mission of being a witness to mercy.” Supporting the young churches throughout the world with your prayers and generous gifts is indeed a merciful witness of this mission. The collection today will help missionaries offer the poor of these areas practical help as they share the mercy of God. It will ensure the development of local dioceses, and support the work of priests, religious and lay leaders who serve those on the margins and in most need. Extend your merciful witness to the whole world through your gift in the special collection for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith.
The Ladies Sodality will hold its annual Service of Remembrance for deceased members, including Catherine Floyd and Catherine Dial, on Sunday, November 6, immediately following Mass. The service will be preceded by a brief business meeting.
Our Annual Watch for Watches Campaign to assist the St. Vincent de Paul Society began on October 1 and will continue through the month of October. Your watch doesn’t have to have a strap or be in working order. Watches are repaired and sold to further the work of the Society which is to help the poor. Last year we collected 104 watches. The Watch for Watches box will be near the statue of St. Joseph. Thanks to all who have contributed thus far. For further information see Marianne Pernick.
Prisoner Gift Project 2016 ~ Blessed Trinity will again participate in this work of mercy and forgiveness begun by Sr. Karen Klimczak, SSJ, and now continued by the Peaceprints Prison Ministries. We are asked to donate instant hot cocoa packets to fill 2,100 gift bags for inmates at the Albion and Wende Correctional Facilities. You can participate and honor Sr. Karen’s memory when you:
- Donate instant hot chocolate packets – Our goal is 4,200 packets by December 4!
- Make a monetary donation – Cash or checks (make out to “Peaceprints of WNY”) in an envelope marked “Prisoner Gifts” and dropped into the weekend collection basket.
- Decorate Gift Bags – Artistic talent isn’t necessary. Draw, trace, or just write season greetings or lines from carols and hymns to personalize the gift bags. For bags contact Amy Johnson HERE.
- Help assemble the gifts on Friday, December 9 here at Blessed Trinity.

Solemn Vespers (Evening Prayer) ~ Closing Celebration of the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy on Sunday, November 6 at 4pm at St. Joseph Cathedral. All are invited to join Bishop Malone in thanking God for the ways in which his mercy has been demonstrated to us throughout the year.

Albert Lenhard Family Scholarship ~ The Albert Lenhard Family Scholarship Fund was established in 1985 through a bequest of the estate of Albert M. Lenhard. The Scholarship was developed to assist applicants who want to continue their formal education beyond high school at the undergraduate and graduate levels. To be eligible for the Scholarship the candidate will have to be residing in the geographic boundaries of the Catholic Churches of Central Buffalo, i.e.: Blessed Trinity, SS Columba Brigid, St. Ann, St. Katharine Drexel, St. Lawrence and St. Martin de Porres. The Lenhard Scholarship fund is administered by the pastor of St. Martin de Porres in collaboration with the African American Commission of the Diocese of Buffalo and the director of the Office of Cultural Diversity. This Scholarship is awarded annually. The completed application and the Personal Statement Essay should be sent to the Office of Cultural Diversity, 795 Main St, Buffalo, NY 14203 to the attention of Milagros Ramos by December 1, 2016. An email confirmation will be sent to verify receipt of your application. The recipient of the award will be invited to receive the award in person at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. celebration, which will take place on Sunday, January 15, 2017, at 10 am at Holy Cross Church in Buffalo. The Canisius College Chorale, under the direction of Frank Scinta, will inaugurate its 2016-17 Sacred Spaces concert series with a program on Sunday, October 23 at 7:30pm in Nativity of Our Lord Church, South Buffalo St and Thorn Ave, Orchard Park. The concert will feature works by Faure, Ticheli, Vivaldi, Whitacre, Dawson and others. Admission is free.
Harmonia Chamber Singers open their 11th season with Voices of Autumn – an eclectic program of a cappella choral treasures on Friday, October 21 at 7:30pm, St. Bernadette’s Church, 5930 S. Abbott Rd., Orchard Park and again on Sunday, October 23 at 4pm, St. Louis Church, 35 Edward Street at Main in Buffalo. $15 donation. Harmonia, one of Western New York’s finest vocal ensembles, will present a cappella works of all subjects, from the seasons to the wonder of nature to the working man. You will hear works such as Simple Gifts, Voices of Autumn, I Have Had Singing, Cindy, Shall We Gather at the River, and Wade in the Water. Gorgeous music in two beautiful spaces. October 28/29 Retreat: “Sharing the Mercy of God” ~ The African Commission is sponsoring a retreat from 6-9pm on Friday, Oct. 28 and Sat. Oct 29 at Holy Cross Parish, 345 Seventh St, Buffalo. Reverend Anthony Mario Ozele will conduct the retreat and serve as homilist at the Africa Thanksgiving Bazaar Mass, to be celebrated by Most Reverend Bishop Richard J. Malone at 10am on Sun., Oct. 30.. A bazaar following the Mass will include a Taste of Africa, auction and basket raffle. All are welcome to participate.
Concert at SS. Columba-Brigid Church, 75 Hickory Street, Buffalo on Sunday, November 6 at 6pm. This special concert will combine the choirs of St. Joseph’s Church in Fredonia and the one from SS. Columba-Brigid. Some favorite local musicians will also be a part of this evening of inspiring music. A social will follow the concert and there is no charge for the event. The building is handicapped accessible.
Living Mercy Beyond the Year of Mercy presented by Deacon Bill Hynes on Monday, November 14 from 7-8pm at Our Lady of Pompeii Church, 158 Lavarack Avenue, Lancaster. The close of the Year of Mercy is quickly approaching! Here is an opportunity to reflect on mercy and to learn ways to make mercy part of our everyday lives. ALL are welcome. Blessed Trinity Welcomes the Traveling Public
on New York’s Path Through History
Saturday, June 7, 2014

Travel New York State’s Path Through History to Blessed Trinity Church on Saturday, June 7. Initiated by Governor Andrew Cuomo in August, 2012, Path Through History Weekend events are designed to showcase the State’s history and cultural significance.
We welcome the public to our Landmark Church from 2-4 p.m. with docents prepared to discuss the unique features of this replica of twelfth century Lombard-Romanesque church architecture, including an exterior fashioned from handmade bricks, an elaborate display of medieval iconography on its terra cotta façade; and more than 2000 symbols summarizing Christian beliefs in ceramic tiles, paintings and sculpture. A video of craftsmen and materials involved in maintaining and restoring the building will also be shown. Visitors are invited to remain and worship with us at 4:30 p.m. Mass.
Located at 317 Leroy Avenue (between Fillmore Avenue and Grider Street), Blessed Trinity is wheelchair accessible and has ample off-street parking behind the church and adjacent FLARE Community Center.
