February Coffee Hour Includes Discussion ~ During our monthly after-Mass coffee hour in St. Charles Hall on February 24, there will be a meeting for all parishioners who wish to ask any questions or clarify items that were part of our annual financial report.
March 3 Mardi Gras Raffle ~ The Sodality’s Mardi Gras Raffle will take place next Sunday, March 3, at a special “Fat Sunday” coffee hour in St. Charles Hall immediately following Mass. The first-prize Basket of Cheer is valued at $225; second and third prizes are gift cards from Wegmans ($50) and Dash’s ($25). If you bring raffle returns next weekend, please DO NOT place them in the collection basket. Instead, take them with you to coffee hour or ask someone who is attending to deposit them for you. Extra tickets will be available at coffee hour for a donation of only $1.00 each or 6 for $5.00. We are grateful to Wegmans (Amherst St.) and Dash’s (Hertel Ave.) for their donations and to Bill and Gwen Warren for providing the Basket of Cheer.
Instruments of Peace ~ Extra! Extra! The Blessed Trinity Choir is beginning to prepare for Easter as we move into the season of Lent and we could use your voice! We understand that a weekly church choir commitment is difficult for many to fulfill – and that is why we have extras for Christmas and Easter. An extra is a person who agrees to sing for special occasions – like Easter – and participates in rehearsals leading up to the Liturgy.
Choir practice is on Tuesday evenings in St. Charles Hall from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. When we have extras, we rehearse for the special occasion first and then for the regular liturgy. That means extras are usually dismissed by 8:00 at the latest. We welcome everyone in the BT Choir – an ability to read music is not a requirement – just a desire to glorify our Lord in song.

Lenten Prayer Partners ~ We are about to begin sign-up for the CCCB Prayer Partner Program. If you haven’t experienced this yet, we hope you will try this year. During the Lenten season you will be given a name of someone from another participating parish to pray for during Lent. Praying in Jesus name seems so important in our world today. Why do we do this? It’s rather simple. Jesus told us: “that if two or more agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by my Father” (Matthew 18: 19, 20). This helps us see the importance of praying with and for one another. Each partner begins to pray for the other’s needs, concerns or special intentions. How do I do it? It can be a simple prayer of remembrance for your prayer partner’s needs; you can include them in a decade of the rosary, at mass time, or during your own individual time of prayer. If they give their phone number, you can make a personal contact to introduce yourself and exchange intentions with one another but it is not required. It is up to the individual and how the Spirit leads them. Our shut-ins are also welcome to add their name to the sign-up sheet by telling the home visitor or calling the parish office to add their name. Look for the yellowsign-up paper on the tables by the entrances at weekend masses during February. The Prayer Partner Committee invites you to join us. Grant Us Peace ~ In 2006, the Cheektowaga Central School District’s Music Boosters commissioned a choral work to celebrate the district’s 50th anniversary and looked to local composer, music educator and radio personality Martin J. Wimmer. The texts combine a Chinese proverb as well as a traditional Latin prayer. The Blessed Trinity Choir was privileged to sing this work, which reflects the universal desire for peace in our world, as this Sunday’s meditation.
Peace
If there is light in the soul, there will be beauty in the person. If there is beauty in the person, there will be harmony in the house. If there is harmony in the house, there will be order in the nation. If there is order in the nation, there will be peace in the world.
Peace, peace, grant us peace. Dona nobis pacem.

Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, February 11. The painting in the Lady Chapel to the left of the Sanctuary at Blessed Trinity is of the Virgin Mary “seen fulfilling the prophecy of Genesis (3:15), with the serpent under her feet.” The figure to the left of Mary is “St. Bernadette Soubirous (1844-1879), to whom Our Lady appeared at Lourdes, France in 1858…. The message of Lourdes was really an invitation to trust in the power of prayer regardless of how desperate the situation is….” (Rev. Becoming Holy Through Music ~ Pope Francis issued an Apostolic Exhortation, Gaudete et Exultate, that explains how to live a holy life. He calls the Beatitudes “Christ’s identity card” (#63) and explains that practicing the beatitudes makes us holy. This weekend’s substitute Music Ministers, Luis Clay and Don Williams, are wonderful examples of Blessed Trinity’s musical community. Their willingness to lead the music during worship in the director’s absence is a true blessing in our church and a beautiful example of trying to live a holy life. Rescheduled Council Meeting ~ Because of a conflict with another important meeting, the February Parish Council meeting has been rescheduled for Friday, February 22, at 7pm in St. Charles Hall.
February Coffee Hour Includes Discussion ~ During our monthly after-Mass coffee hour in St. Charles Hall on February 24, there will be a meeting for all parishioners who wish to ask any questions or clarify items that were part of our annual financial report.
March 3 Mardi Gras Raffle ~ The Ladies Sodality is holding its first fundraiser in two years. Again, thanks to the generosity of our friends, Bill and Gwen Warren, who have donated the contents of our first-prize Basket of Cheer valued at approximately $225. Local supermarkets Wegmans (Amherst St.) and Dash’s (Hertel Ave.) have donated the second and third prize gift cards, $50 and $25 respectively. If you did not receive tickets in the mail this week, you will find extras on the tables near each entrance. You may also obtain tickets from Sodality board members or by calling the rectory office (716-833-0301). Tickets are still only $1 each or 6 for $5. Lenten Prayer Partners ~ We are about to begin sign-up for the CCCB Prayer Partner Program. If you haven’t experienced this yet, we hope you will try this year. During the Lenten season you will be given a name of someone from another participating parish to pray for during Lent. Praying in Jesus name seems so important in our world today. Why do we do this? It’s rather simple. Jesus told us: “that if two or more agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by my Father” (Matthew 18: 19, 20). This helps us see the importance of praying with and for one another. Each partner begins to pray for the other’s needs, concerns or special intentions. How do I do it? It can be a simple prayer of remembrance for your prayer partner’s needs; you can include them in a decade of the rosary, at mass time, or during your own individual time of prayer. If they give their phone number, you can make a personal contact to introduce yourself and exchange intentions with one another but it is not required. It is up to the individual and how the Spirit leads them. Our shut-ins are also welcome to add their name to the sign-up sheet by telling the home visitor or calling the parish office to add their name. Look for the yellowsign-up paper on the tables by the entrances at weekend masses during February. The Prayer Partner Committee invites you to join us. Part-Time Employment Opportunity ~ Blessed Trinity Church is looking to employ a person to work on an as needed basis to assist in shoveling the walkways and stairs to the church on Saturday and/or Sunday before Mass, only when needed due to snow. In addition, we are looking for a person to clean the church hall after the food pantry closes on Wednesday. This can be done on Wednesday afternoon or during the morning on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday. This task takes 2-3 hours. Keeping Warm Spiritually ~ What a frigid week we have endured! When the temperature outside plummets, we bundle up and hunker down and make the most out of it. Whether it was a cup of hot cocoa, a fuzzy handmade scarf, or the world’s comfiest house slippers, we all found a way to stay warm in spite the cold. One of the ways we can choose to stay warm spiritually in a society that seems wintry and aloof is to seek music that feeds our soul. This week’s hymn selections were meant to boost your spirit and remind you of the greatest comfort of all – the love of our Lord. Perhaps during this week you will be reminded that “everyone who loves is born of God.” You will enjoy that cup of cocoa and remember “the greatest gift is love.” May “Alleluia be your song” as you bundle that scarf around your neck, and may those cozy slippers remind you of our “Beautiful Savior.” May you carry a song of Christ in your heart and may it warm you in the weeks to come. Know Your Faith: Are we supposed to make noise or have conversations in the church? We are not supposed to make noise in church, for Jesus encourages us to use the church for prayers: “My house shall be a house of prayers” (Matthew 21:13). There are some reasons why some make noise or engage in conversation in the church. Perhaps they might not know we are not supposed to make noise or engage in distracted conversation in church. Also the weather condition (winter season) of our geographical location and the way our churches are built. Our church building, like many others, does not have greeting rooms or space to allow for brief or long discussions before or after services. The church is a house of prayer. We are expected to show respect to God by being quiet and reflect on the different mysteries displayed through artistic paintings in the church to help us pray and praise God. We should also allow those who might be praying to have a quiet time to themselves and not be a source of distraction to them. May God help us to use his house for worship more effectively. Amen.

Thursday Night Bingo has been cancelled on January 31 due to weather advisories. We are still planning to play Bingo on Saturday, February 2, when the Progressive number will be 53 with a carryover of $606.25. Because of the Bonus Ball giveaway last Saturday, there will be no Bonus Ball carryover. We’re looking forward to a thaw from January’s “big chill.” Please join us in St. Charles Hall, 350 Dewey Ave. Doors open at 6:30pm and games begin at 8pm.
Catholic Relief Services ~ A special collection for Catholic Relief Services will take place on the weekend of January 26/27. Your generosity will answer the knock of Jesus in Disguise. Your financial support is greatly appreciated.

The Lord is Our Rock ~ I believe we will all agree that we live in troubling times – all one needs to do is listen to the daily news to hear of seemingly insurmountable problems locally, nationally, and world-wide. We have about six weeks of Ordinary Time before we begin our Lenten journey, and this is a good time to hear the Gospel of Luke and reflect on how Christ prepared for his Ministry, the Journey to Jerusalem, his Suffering and Victory. We can’t thank you enough! We are all so very appreciative of our Building and Grounds Man, Dennis Pawlikowski, and the gentlemen from the parish who showed up early for last Sunday’s Mass honoring Rev. Martin Luther King to plow and shovel us out of the heaviest one-day snowfall of the winter. We are so sorry we can’t “name names,” but it was hard to identify each and every one beneath your blizzard headgear and the swirling snow. The Parish Council greatly appreciates the great job you did clearing sidewalks, stairs and entrances. Although turnout was understandably low because of the weather, we are sure that everyone who made the effort to attend was delighted by the easy access to church. There are many facets of hospitality. Once again, you showed that Blessed Trinity has the “right stuff.
Vital Employment Opportunity ~ Blessed Trinity Church is looking to employ a person to work on an as needed basis to assist in shoveling the walkways and stairs to the church on Saturday and/or Sunday before Mass, only when needed due to snow. In addition, we are looking for a person to clean the church hall after the food pantry closes on Wednesday. This can be done on Wednesday afternoon or during the morning on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday. This task takes 2-3 hours. Diocesan Celebration to Take Place at Blessed Trinity ~ On Sunday, January 20, at 10am, Blessed Trinity is honored to host the annual diocesan celebration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This year’s theme is:”Living in the Spirit of God: Celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.” Our bishop, the Most Reverend Richard Malone, Th.D. will preside and the guest homilist will be Rev. Clarence Williams, CPPS, Ph.D. A reception following the Mass will include a basket raffle to raise funds for the MLK Scholarship Fund. If you are willing to donate a gift basket for the raffle or finger foods for the reception, please bring them to St. Charles Hall on Saturday, January 19, between 10am and noon. You may also call Althea Porter (716-316-8395) to arrange for pick-up.
Tuesday, January 22, is designated as a Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children.
Catholic Relief Services ~ A special collection for Catholic Relief Services will take place on the weekend of January 26/27. Your generosity will answer the knock of Jesus in Disguise. Your financial support is greatly appreciated.
Monthly Anointing and Birthday Blessing ~ Because of the special Mass honoring Rev. Martin Luther King on January 20, our monthly anointing of the sick and well-aging has been rescheduled for the fourth Sunday, January 27, following the 10 o’clock Mass. Mass on that day will end with a birthday blessing for all those born in the month of January.
January Coffee Hour is Sunday, January 27, following the 10am Mass. The Parish Council is our hosting organization.

Thank You to our faithful volunteers who turned out on January 7 to remove the Christmas decorations, carry them to the basement, sweep, vacuum, and water the still vibrant poinsettias. The Giving Tree ~ A warm “THANK YOU” to everyone who helped make our 2018 Giving Tree very fruitful for Haven House, a home for victims of domestic abuse. The envelopes taken off the tree during Advent were returned with $723.00. This will surely help Haven House meet some of its costs for such essentials as heat, electricity and maintenance. Many blessing to all who participate in any way.

Monday, January 21 ~ The “Prayers for the Catholic Church” group is gathering to pray to strengthen the faith of Catholics and to remember Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Following 12:05pm Mass at St. Louis Church (780 Main Street at Edward, Buffalo), the group will pray the Rosary outside of the Catholic Center, 795 Main St. Find out more at prayersforthecatholichurch.com or by calling 716-316-8550. Relying on the promptings of the Holy Spirit, Prayers for the Catholic Church was formed by lay Catholics of Western New York as a means to take action in response to the clerical sex abuse scandal in the Diocese of Buffalo and throughout the world. We believe our premise is simple, yet powerful – we gather to participate in Catholic Mass and communal public prayer. We pray to strengthen the faith of all Catholics, which can be challenged and compromised during this time of crisis in the Church. In addition to the January 21 event, Prayers for the Catholic Church gathers every Thursday for 12:05 p.m. Mass at St. Louis Church and prayer outside the Diocese of Buffalo Catholic Center. We see the Catholic Center, the Diocesan “headquarters,” as the focal point of the current crisis, and thus we pray that the people and activities within maintain true to their mission of serving God and His people. Since September 2018, over 50 people have joined us for Mass and prayer.
