St. Alphonsus Liguori (1695-1787) and St. Ignatius of Loyola (1491-1556), whose feast days we celebrate this week, are both depicted in a in a group of twelve figures identified as “Monks, Hermits, and Religious” in the dome of our church. St. Alphonsus, the first standing figure on the left, is pictured with a pen and book. Although he acquired fame as a writer, the founder of the Redemptorist Congregation is also remembered for his preaching and pastoral reforms. His feast is celebrated on August 1. St. Ignatius, fourth from the left (standing), was on his way to military fame before a debilitating war injury. His conversion experience began during his convalescence, and his writings during that time culminated in his greatest work, the Spiritual Exercises. Founder of the Jesuits, his feast day is July 31. The liturgical committee will meet in St. Charles Hall following 10am Mass on Sunday, July 30.
Don’t Miss the Boat on Sunday, July 30 ~ If you have a paid reservation for our parish boat ride, please allow extra time to arrive at the Buffalo River History Ticket Booth located on the Boardwalk off of 44 Prime Street (Canalside) by 4 PM on Sunday, July 30. (We will be competing with Buffalo Ribfest for parking places). Boarding will begin shortly after 4 PM. Due to a successful ticket sale, we will now be sailing on the Harbor Queen, which is a larger boat with two decks. We will return to the same location at 6 PM, and you are then free to walk around Canalside, the Naval Park or Erie Basin Marina, and enjoy your evening. There is a NFTA Metro Rail stop near the Boardwalk if you wish to take advantage of University or Lasalle station Park ‘n Ride or park downtown and take the above-ground portion of Metro Rail for free.
Friday, August 4, is First Friday. Adoration and Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will take place in the Daily Mass Chapel from 8-11am, followed by daily Mass. Please consider spending at least one-half hour in prayer and meditation with Christ in the Blessed Sacrament.
August Mission Appeal ~ There will be a second collection next Saturday and Sunday, August 5 and 6, for Guadalupe-Bolivian Mission in South America. Rev. Ivan R. Trujillo will be speaking to us at both masses about the Mission. Please be prepared to give generously to support the Guadalupe-Bolivian Mission.
Parish Council Candidates ~ We continue actively seeking candidates for the 2017-18 parish council. Any registered parishioner 18-years or older is eligible. Please give serious consideration to this important form of stewardship. You may nominate yourself or another registered parishioner (with that person’s permission), and there are several ways in which to make your interest known: click HERE and leave your contact information for the committee; contact any of the committee members listed below; or call the church office (716-833-0301) and request that someone contact you. Nomination forms can be found on the tables near the church doors (orange paper) through August 13. Helping Hands Food Pantry ~ Luis Clay has announced a new operating schedule for the Helping Hands Food Pantry, effective immediately. It will now be open on Saturdays only from Noon to 4pm. Sr. Maureen Harris & friends
Party for Sister Maureen Harris ~ Save the date … September 17 (12:30-2:30pm) at Ss. Columba-Brigid’s parish hall. Everyone from the CCCB parishes is invited to attend a Bon Voyage Tea Party for Sr. Maureen Harris on that day. If you haven’t already heard, Sr. Maureen has volunteered to travel to our Sister Communities in Tanzania, Africa. She leaves for six months at the end of September—first to Rome—and then on to the mission territory, where she will travel and walk with our Sisters and the people in their missions. Sr. Maureen spent three months there in 2008 teaching English as a second language. This time she will follow up with the Sisters, assist with their record keeping, and offer an encouraging presence as the Sisters cultivate leadership within their own communities. We would like Sister Maureen to have many happy memories to sustain her during her six months abroad, and you can be one of them by attending on September 17.
Wedding Anniversary Mass ~ Any couple celebrating a 50th, 60th or 70th Wedding Anniversary during 2017 is invited to participate in a special Mass to be celebrated on Sunday, October 15, 2017 by Bishop Richard J. Malone, at 3pm at St. Joseph Cathedral located in downtown Buffalo. Following the Mass, an informal reception will be held at the Adam’s Mark Hotel. Please contact our secretary, Pat Pendleton, at the church office as soon as possible if you wish to attend.

Healing Mass on Friday, August 4, at 7pm at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (8550 Main Street in Williamsville). Let’s come together to pray with Fr. Annual St. Lawrence Feast Day Celebration is Sunday, August 13 at St. Lawrence Parish (1520 East Delavan Ave., Buffalo). The celebration begins with a 12 noon Mass and continues with food and fun. Chiavetta’s chicken dinners, hamburgers, hot dogs, salads, and beverages will be available for purchase. All proceeds go to pay for our new roof.
